It sorta exploded. Too weak? (Corsair RM650)

SnaKz

Hey guys. So my PSU kinda exploded, PC shutdown followed by a big pop.

I'm was using a Corsair RM650,no overclocking.

The Specs:

Asus Maximus Hero VII

Intel i7 4790K

Asus GTX 780 DirectCU II OC

1 HDD & 1 SSD

8GB of HyperX RAM (2 sticks)

Corsair H100i

5 Corsair Fans

So was the RM650 not strong enough? If not then what would cause it to explode? O.o

Might've been something that got in to the PSU... or a bad batch...

Your computer probably pulls like 550 max, so it was probably just a bad supply.  @SnaKz

Even if it is too weak it wouldn't explode.

Wattage should be fine, but a bit close. Not really sure what happened, was there lightning? Did you do something when it happened? Did it ruin your parts?

I would say, that a 550W high quality PSU would be enough, even if you were to overclock the CPU.

Did it explode, just like that, at the first start-up? .__.

Request a RMA from Corsair on corsair.force.com

Don't even think about trying to start the computer again with that PSU, unless you want to damage your other parts.

Oh, Corsair, you shouldn't forget your videos, even very old ones...

Not being enough is outta the question. You can't pull more than 450watts on full full load.

Just send it back for RMA and hope that nothing else got fried :|

B-BUT!

Still, even that site you linked doesn't really tell us why it's supposed to blow up... it was just a defective unit, it happens to all the best psus...

One of the PSU videos where Logan doesn't actually look inside the PSU himself to see the components. Should be a sign. The RM PSU's are overpriced and overrated. If they were cheaper then they would be worth the hype and the sacrifice in quality, but not at the numbers they're at now.

Rm doesnt's suck and also the normal font and size is enough

You're really going to say that when I just provided evidence that they do, and this is a thread about an RM blowing up?

Just because its not as good as something else doesnt mean that it sucks...These things can happen to any PSU even the best quality ones..

I just disagree on the part that it sucks..Its just not as good as some competition

RMA that bitch. It should never do that. A good 600 watt would have been able to hold it's own with those components... With luck nothing else go killed.

Well according to Jonny guru the capacitors in the RM series aren't good, this result shouldn't be too surprising to be honest. If you can, opt for corsair to pay you out or give you something besides an RM series - CX would be a better option.

The most common result of insufficient wattage is a paperweight that looks like a PC

The secondary capacitors are cheap Chinese ones, which had problems with PSU blowing up and failing a few years ago.

I would stick to EVGA supernova, cooler master v series, xfx and seasonic off course ;-)

Of course that's the good stuff, my recommendation was based on OP's limited situation :)
