When change.org causes facepalms

Before we get started, yes. I am that lazy for not getting away from their mailing list.

So anyway, I get this whilst checking for my email:

It's crazy to think of leaving your child or pet to die in a hot car in a parking lot, but the truth is it happens all the time. Already this year, 14 children have died after being left in hot cars in parking lots. As the country's largest retailer, dangerous and sometimes deadly incidents affect children and pets in Walmart parking lots all the time. Take a look at a few of these headlines:

“Police: Father arrested after 3 kids left in hot car” from a Walmart in my state, Georgia.

“Dog dies in hot car while woman 'browses' at Walmart for 13 hours” from Florida.

“Police Investigating Baby Left Alone in Car” from a Walmart in Pennsylvania.

Those headlines are all from this year. I could go back further, but you get the idea. There's an easy way for Walmart to stop this rash of children and pets being left in hot cars.

I started a petition on Change.org calling on Walmart to post highly visible signs outside its stores warning people not to leave children or pets in cars. Please click here to sign my petition.

Busy parents or pet-owners might think it's okay to leave their kids or pets in the car for a few minutes, but it's never okay -- and we all know how Walmart can be.. It's a huge store with so many things, and before you know it you've been there for an hour. It's too easy to get distracted and return to your car to find a tragedy.

Posting signs would be a simple, inexpensive, and effective way for Walmart to save the lives of children and pets.

When it's so easy for a company to help save lives, why shouldn't they do it? I know if enough people sign my petition, we can get Walmart to take this obvious and important step to protect children and pets.

Please sign my petition calling on Walmart to post signs warning customers against leaving their children or pets in cars.

Thank you,

AJ Ware
Atlanta, Georgia

tl;dr Someone is trying to pester Walmart to put up high visibility signs because people are too stupid not to use common sense by not leaving their kids and pets to die in a hot car.

I personally think this is one of the dumber petitions. As daft as a bottled water company being petitioned to put warning labels that read "water may cause drowning" on their product. Come on, really? Should it be a company's responsibility to tell you not to kill your own children?

The people in my country sometimes, I swear..

Oddly enough, there are "don't leave yo damn pets in the car yo!" signs in the parking lot of my local walmart... only pets though, children may die in almost literal fire apparently.

Do not  as I  do, and  not  as I say. Instead do as you may..

Normal people know not to do that, the ones that do shouldn't be allowed to breed or own pets.

i stopped with change.org when someone started a position for canada post not to end delivery to homes.

"I wonder, has anyone at Canada Post ever tried to to push a stroller or a wheelchair or a walker through the snow? I don't think they realize the impact of ending door-to-door mail delivery when it comes to the parents of young children, to the disabled, and to the elderly, especially in winter. "

uhhhh... do you know what its like to slip on sidewalks that havent been shovelled and de-iced... over and over for 8 hours a day as your job? or the chronic back issues canada post carriers develop after years of hauling your lady schick samples. do you know how much either our taxes or postage fees would go up so you could sit on your couch all day waiting for your mail? do you know that most canadians in urban areas already don't have door to door delivery, and havent for nearly 2 decades?

point is: almost anything on change.org is already whiny bullcrap. anyone who shops at walmart and leaves their children to die in cars.... would probably leave their children to die in cars at any other store. or while in a bar, casino or strip joint.

i love the water may cause drowning bit. where's that petition? i'll sign that just cause it'd be hilarious.

I always guarantee that no more than 50% of what I say is useful.

I made that one up because it sounded really dumb...if someone actually made a petition about that, holy shit I'd sign for giggles.

youd have to make a sob story up to go with it. "a kindergarten class was left alone with a case of 24 waterbottles for less than 5 minutes... when the teacher returned, every student was dead. autopsy reports that only half a bottle of water was found in each childs lungs. it is presumed the other half of the bottles are still at large and considered very dangerous"

ps: attempting to smoke the molten plastic bottles may induce seizures.

I always guarantee that no more than 50% of what I say is useful.

@Mooshi

I am not sure why this is a BAD idea. Do you not know by know that people lack common sense?

this still happens on a daily basis, people are stupid and even if they read a sign going "your child will die in your car" they will probably just assume its bullshit and carry on

Who browses Walmart for 13 hours?? What the fuck.

It can kill in like 10 to 30 minutes, especially if the windows are up and the car is in the sun

So that happens more than maybe once or twice per week or so? And mostly in the US? I don't see this happening anywhere else in the world.

I can't believe some people are that stupid. And I thought I was the special kind of stupid...

Never trust my advice. Only take any and all advice from me with a grain of salt. Just a heads up.

I think it's a combination that a large corporation shouldn't have to tell you not to put your kids and pets in harms way..the nurturing instinct should tell that to you and what another poster mentioned. This is targetting Walmart specifically when this kind of thing can happen in literally every parking lot which makes it even more of a pointless petition.

Frankly, if someone is dumb enough to leave a living creature inside a hot car for 13 hours, I highly doubt they are capable of reading.

That is true it should be more of a government campaign to advertise it and have it broadcast on the news to people to make thema ware of the issue

As a note I know in some states it is considered Illegal to abandon children/pets in a car as it would be considered cruelty.

If kids and animals are the targets, yeah. This should be a nation wide thing and not someone complaining to Walmart of all things. Eh...as much as I don't care for large government, I sometimes wish you'd have to get a license to have children. We have so many questionable people breeding in my country.

This I agree with, you should have to pass a basic parenting test to ensure you are fit for it. Would help keep the population down too and stop people abusing benefits (at least in the UK) by having lots of children

Also should be licences for people to use computers/internet

From what I heard about Walmart and the people who shop there, why are we surprised? They probably forget to put their clothes on the correct way round.

What do they know of England, who only England know?

"Well that's what I always said I wanted to be remembered for, for being honest. Nothing else is worth a damn"
