I know this might be a silly question

But are more RAM better for Minecraft's render distance?

I'm a noob at RAM but it seems to make sense.

If not, what does?  GPU?  CPU?

(I'm just asking this out of curiosity.  Not going to actually go buy anything more just for Minecraft.)

Anything over 4GB of ram won't help Minecraft.

What matters is your CPU and GPU.

Would more VRAM help then?

MAN I HAVE 6.5 GB ALLOCATED TO MINECRAFT AND I STILL CRASH FROM "NOT ENOUGH MEMORY" ERRORS.

1GB of vram is enough for the default texture pack.

If you want to use higher res resource packs get 2GB of vram

If you are looking to use a 3d model resource pack, you will want at least 3-6GB of vram (the models are stupidly unoptimised)

You need to download the latest 64 bit java to use over 1GB of ram.

Do you even mod? On single player, only using minecraft (and windows) I'm on 6GB usage.

For playing minecraft decently you need:

8GB of ram

A decent CPU that is good at single threaded applications

A GPU decent enough to avoid dropping frames like crazy every time the lazy Minecraft code tells it to render a million things at the time because you just loaded a new chunk.

Most GPUs run minecraft well, but on average scores, when we talk about min. frames, you need a mid tier GPU to avoid jumping from 200fps to 30 every time you load data massively.

Typical setups with an i3, R9 270 and enough ram are the sweetspot on the game.

Who builds a system pointed towards vanilla? O.o

It doesn't really matter, you never mentioned mods in the OP which could lead people to believe you were playing the vanilla version. Not to mention there's probably quite a lot of people still playing the vanilla version.

I have 10GB assigned to minecraft, and when I play it uses up to 9GB.  The most I have EVER used is around 10GB and that was with loads of mods. (I mean Mod packs that have TONS and TONS of mods)

I would say minimum of 4GB for vanilla and minimum of 8GB for modpacks, but if its a big mod pack then assign as much as you can while leaving 2GB free for the system.

I am not saying that I am correct and you should do it, but this is what I do.

1) we are talking about single player. Obviously mods use a lot more.

2) you look at the amount of ram usage by pressing f3 not task manager which gives you total system usage.

3) minecraft is not single threaded. When I play vanilla, 4 of my 8 threads get used.

4) the minecraft code is not lazy, it is just the way java works.

5) It is not the GPU that loads data. It is the CPU. GPU just does the rendering.

I have a server that runs the exact same version, but with extra added multiplayer oriented mods, currently the server is running 146 mods and has optional texture packs.

I'm talking about real task manager usage, changing Java settings you can allow MC to actually use more memory than allowed by default, and have less lag and stutters with mods.

There is multithreading, but everytime the game has to do something CPU intensive (it's Java after all) it relies on just one core, where it assigns most of this workload.

It is lazy, and Notch is terrible; the majority of the modding community agrees on that. There is a lot of optimization that can be done, and even some mods take care of that, but essentially it can be a lot better.

I know how a CPU assigns data to the GPU, but the instructions that are handled by the CPU are complex algorithms that require a lot of work from the GPU.

I'm on the last year of my software developing career, I'm not just guessing or repeating what a youtuber/streamer says.

Changing the java arguments I allocate 4G of ram to my (vanilla w/ failthful32 ) game and it never uses over 1700MB

In the 1.8 update there is a shit ton of optimisations and the game does use multiple threads for separate things, such as multithreaded chunk loading, entity rendering, and mob AI pathfinding.

Also Notch is no longer part of the devs. The game has changed a ton since he last touched it, and almost all of the code has been rewritten.

4Gbs is enough for Vanilla. 8Gbs for nodded Minecraft. Though you need a pretty beefy computer to run mod packs like FTB or Tekkit. The game itself is badly optimized (Though it looks like Jen is improving the game) and unfortunately some modders are terrible at modding. I'm surprised the game runs with Modpacks installed.

I use about 6-8 Gb for vanilla and 10 or more for modded, but then im getting average 100 frames and almost never go belove 50 fps. And i Also use a hig FOV and a lot of chunk loadings.
