My old employer keeps paying me...

emachado99

Hey,

So I quit my job (paper route lol) in the beginning of June because I was moving cities on the 30th of June. Since I quit I have still been getting direct deposits into my bank account from them... It's not a large amount of money by all means, but should I just keep quiet? My old boss was not the brightest and I saw online someone had the same situation as me and everyone just said keep it, it's there fault. What should I do?

Shanks :D

You could probably end up being sued if you don't bring it to their attention.

I'd play it safe and report it to them now.

Tell them ASAP, there can be serious legal issues. A friend of mine got payed twice after quitting, and he wasn't even aware, and his previous employer tried suing him, and he almost got declined a job when he was applying for what is now his current job because he used a co-worker as a reference, and the company monitored the call and tried f'ing him as much as possible.

Scary, risky stuff, man.

I really wish that we'd just make organic hardware already, that grows and adapts to the demands it needs to meet. That way, grannies' computers can be floppy sacks of organicness and the 12 year old Minecrafters will look like the guys that only do bicep curls, and the nerdy programmers will finally have justice, with their body-builder rigs that skipped leg day.

Can they really sue me over $40? At the age of 15...?

Yes. You didn't work those hours that you were payed for. I should note that my buddy was working part-time as a 17 year old that time, so not even an adult yet, same as you. Although he was getting payed a bit more.

You'll probably get to keep the money, just let them know, even though you won't be getting payed from that point :P And if you don't get to keep the money, just nut up and fork it over without thought, then complain to us how your ex-boss is a stingy bastard, we'll be here to listen, as most of us have been in the same boat boss-wise :)

Call and tell them. Then refund all those money back to that particular company. Or you will likely face legal liability and criminal charges down the road. This world isn't fair in general. Sometimes its good not to be greed and save yourself from alot of troubles.

I'd just as much as tell them to fuck off and that it's their responsibility to watch what they do with their finances and not the responsibility of an ex employee.

To my knowledge, once and employer pays you, they cannot ask for it back even if you weren't entitled to it. At least at the last company I worked for that's how it worked.

Also most places have their pay set up so that you get paid for the previous pay peroid, so after leaving work you usually get one paycheck after that.

I would still notify them of the problem.

I once got a few bucks more than i actually deserved from my present employer, i didn't check my hours so i didn't even realise that - nevertheless they figured it out 2 months later and asked me to give back that extra money. It was quite confusing at start, but they were right - so yeah, tell them.

Yep she emailed me back saying "Consider it a bonus, you did an amazing job!" So I get to keep it :) Yay

Tell your old boss, he will probably take the 40 dollars you give him as 2 twenties, and use it to light his cigar.  Then laugh in your face.  But fear not, you did the right thing.
