Looks like Capcom is up for sale to the highest bidder.  The shareholders basically said 'no' to the existing takeover-defense plan, but the company is still taking measures to prevent a hostile takeover.  What does this mean for the gaming industry?  It could be good and bad.  Capcom had an abysmal E3 after revealing one game, Monster Hunter for the 3DS.  They have a huge collection of IPs, a lot of which will probably never see the light of day again but could be up for sale individually.  Here is a list of some of the more popular ones.

Resident Evil
Ghosts 'n Goblins
Street Fighter
Mega Man
Monster Hunter
Bionic Commando
Strider

It's hard to say which company would put up the cash to buy them.  I don't see Sony making a pitch, after a $1.3 billion loss last year and a projected $500 million loss for next year, they also sold all their Square Enix stocks which can't be good.  Nintendo has their own financial worries as of late but has shown love for Mega Man and has a new Monster Hunter game.  Microsoft certainly has a Scrooge McDuck sized money bin but their gaming division isn't in the best of shape, even big Bill said that they could do without it.  Amazon bought Double Helix, so it really is up for grabs to anybody.

Capcom announced today that is has not renewed the company's takeover defense, a countermeasure instated in 2008 to prevent Capcom from falling under another company's control should a third party buy up a large amount of its stock.

The practice of blocking stock purchase takeovers is common among companies; Capcom's six-year-old countermeasure was instated after a shareholder vote to block third parties from gaining control by putting stock purchases through a  meticulous approval process.

Today's decision, made during Capcom's most recent investor meeting due to a lack of votes in its favor, opens the company to buyout, should another party acquire a majority of Capcom stock.

Maybe if they'd put out something new every once in a while...

You're and your are not the same. Neither are their, there, and they're. Defiantly and Definitely are definitely not the same. Definately and Rediculous are not words, and you should feel bad for misspelling them. If English is your first language, you don't have a learning disorder, and you get any of these wrong, you are making the entire forum slightly dumber by doing so. Please take the extra three seconds to type properly, and have a nice day.

No Capcom's IPs won't be up for sale individually. That only happens when a company goes bankrupt and needs to sell of assets in order to pay debts. Anyway Capcom is big enough and worth enough that it cuts out a lot of companies from doing anything. A company like GungHo or Tencent could swoop in and pick them up but most game publishers aren't going to be able to do much and the 1st parties are out of the picture (MS could probably afford it but it would be a crazy expense upfront and very expensive to manage). If anything comes from this expect it to be more of a merger than an outright buyout, especially if Capcom continues to lose money.

Wow, that sucks, and really surprising too. Wouldn't have expected Capcom to be up for sale any time soon.

I'm not surprised to be honest, It was only a matter of time.

It was reported only months ago that Capcom only had $152 million dollars in cash reserves and efforts to turn around their financial issues by setting up a mobile division and by doing more DLC practices failed before they even got off the ground.

Combine that with recent internal conflict between senior members of the company, It was only a matter of when, not if they would be sold off to the highest bidder.

Nintendo would be a good fit for them in my view. They need to bolster up their IP offering, especially after letting Atlus go to Sega.

EA should buy them. They are perfect for each other what with all the on-disc DLCs, turning their franchises to mindless shooters, milking some franchises to death...
