is it better to leave your gaming rig on or turn it off

i want to know if i shuld leave my gaming rig on at night and most of the time or turn it off

Less wear and tear is good. I shut mine off at night.

 

It probably won't make too big of a difference though.

I shut mine off at night. Saves power and less stress on the components.

 

However, it probably makes so little of a difference. It's all personal preference. There is no real right and wrong.

i sometimes put it on power saver or automatic mode at night...less heat...

I shut mine down when I go to bed. Saves me about $10 a month on the electric bill.

He is wrong if he tries to claim that its harmful. Less wear and tear is good. Saves power. Less use on components. If you are uncomfortable shutting off then just put it in sleep or something.

 

It probably won't matter too much though.

theoretically, it does keep components in better shape, but I often don't bother tuning it off because my PC is dead silent. 

The difference is like 10 years vs 10 years and 3 months, or 8 and 8 and 3 months respectively if you do any OCing  :rolleyes:

Yes, the difference is so small there's practically no point in caring (I guess logically it would matter more if you're using suicidal OV settings and have all conservation features off)

It's like living life and actively avoiding to do any activities that require jumping so that you get arthritis in your knees at 73 instead of 72.

There are so many factors involved no one can say for certain which is better long term.  Factors most people don't even know about such as spinup spindown cycles being far harder on hard drives than leaving them spinning all the time, heat shock from the systems being warm and then cold slowly cracking solder joints, electromigration slowly wearing away at the joints between every single semiconductor junction in every chip in the system, people having no idea if tin whiskers grow more quickly with systems on or off, and so many more itll make your head spin if you ever really delve into the physics of it.

 

I personally leave all my systems I use daily on 24/7 but I built them for power efficiency... and turn off the ones I dont use as often.

I prefer keeping my system up and running 24/7 because of humidity as well, just the other day (about 7 months ago) one of the computers at work died because they turned it off and the humidity caused the mobo to cease the moment they turned it on. (this is less likely with the newer motherboards though) I prefer using power efficient products and leaving my rig on.

Fans and HDD's might not like it. But not much. It's just on you what you like to do. I personally turn it off since it's close to my bed.

I turn mine off even if I'll be out of the house for a few hours.  You don't leave your car running when parked in the garage do you?

 

In the past, I used to leave my computers on over night, but after having an SSD, my computer turns off and on so freaking fast that I don't mind waiting the additional 10 seconds to start running programs.

 

That and my PC is overclocked, draws more power, and I have lots of pricey fans.  I would like to get the most useful life possible out of my investment.

 

I have an 8 year old AMD 3200+ and 512MB GPU that is still running to this day.  Only thing I ever had to replace is the PSU.  Can't game for #$%^, but it still plays Solitaire like a boss!  Can also watch Youtube and some flash games.  Pretty impressive for such an old single core machine.

In most cases the highest significance that can be felt is on your wallet due to power consumption. If you leave your PC on for no reason, you might aswell turn it off. Yeah power cycles could degrade mechanical disks, sure, but lot's of things can cause HDD corruption or failure other than power cycles. Soldering can crack due to heat/heatloss, sure, but again chances are small. Think of all the other things you turn off and on repetitively like your TV, they too have processors in them and lot's of soldering. Soldering can also be cracked due to vibrations. But again, it's rare, and is usually bad from construction if it does crack.

 

All in all, chances are the negative effects won't impact you for a long time.

I just put it to sleep and rely on my ram to keep my data.

Why would you leave it on? :D What a silly question.

 

Less heat in the room, less power consumption (mine draws around 80W at idle, that's ~6€ a month for an extra 12h of on time/day). The cache get's emptied. Less wear on components, especially HDD and fans. Less dust build up.

who cares...

that may be the case during the raining season, when it's dry we mount our lions and go hunt for on quests to find watering holes. 

 

seriously though, we got all sort of weather and sometimes it can be quite misty in certain areas which causes humidity.

what? humidity is less prone to damaging stuff while the pc is on mate, the heat produced by the parts make stuff like mist or w/e evaporate before it can harm the components while when the pc is off it's free just to sit on the components and next time you turn on the pc it might make a short. this is not very likely to happen but has happened in a few cases that I have experienced.
