Would you be intrested in a Lenovo Y50 review?

Killoginet

I have ordered a Lenovo Y50 and it will be here next week.

I noticed there is a lack of reviews on this product.

Would you guys be interested in my first impressions of this laptop and a review?

Great. Could you try gaming on it too, please.

I would love to have this one reviewed. I am considering grabbing this one for school in the fall, and there hasn't been any solid reviews for it yet, that I have seen.

Okay I'll do the review. The laptop will be here tomorrow so hopefully have a video this weekend.

What are some things you would like me to go over in the review?

Right now I'm planning on reviewing programs I'll be using often; Autodesk Inventor, AutoCAD, and Creo Parametric 2.0.

As for games I'm planning on benchmarking BF4 and Star Citizen dogfighter.

Any other suggestions?

hey any updates on the review?

it would be great if you could let us know if the laptop picks up smudge marks easily, how are the viewing angles on the screen and of course the battery life.

Thanks :)

Please tell us if it's IPS or not. Some saying it's listing as IPS is an "error"

I'd love a review of the Y50 because I've considered picking one up for myself.

Key things that are overlooked in many laptop reviews are the quality of the keyboard and the screen - so if you could go over those areas in your review I would be ever so grateful  :D

I've heard it's a TN panel and a pretty terrible one at that...

I just bought it and I can confirm that unless you buy the 4k model (which I was about to until I found out about the 25% restocking fee newegg charges) the screen is really bad.

Really bad? TN? Can it be calibrated to look alright?

it's pretty bad.... I've tried calibrating it and it did help but the viewing angels are very poor and the color shift is very noticeable. Pretty much if you look 20 degrees in any direction except right at the screen you can notice it. The screen itself looks washed out. Feel free to ask anything else about it :P

My version has the 860m, i7 4700HQ and 8GB of Ram.

The screen in the only negative thing I have to say about the laptop. Everything else is great, besides all of the bloatware that lenovo installs with it.

I haven't used the laptop enough to really get a good idea of the battery life but I'll get you an answer by tomorrow.

WiFi-

I did a speed test  in my room with my laptop over 2.4ghz wireless. My router, a Netgear N750 Duel Band, is located in a floor below me in the basement and about thirty horizontal feet away. My desk top, which is connected via an Ethernet cable, gets ~60 down and ~7 up with 10 ping. I ran multiple tests over WiFi with the Lenovo laptop and received ~15 down and ~7up consistently with 11 ping. The WiFi indicator does show the signal is at full strength. For a comparison, my Iphone 5s got ~30 down and ~6 up with 60 ping. My old Dell Inspiron laptop showed similar resaults to the Lenovo except with a higher ping at 35.

(results in Mbps)

Boot Time (8GB SSD w/ a 5400 1T hard drive) -

From a complete shutdown to ready to use it took ~14 seconds.

Build Quality-

Keep in mind I have never owned an expensive laptop and my previous all plastic Dell was a given to me by my sister when she purchased a new one.

Let me start off by saying that the moment I took it out of the thin plastic cloth that it came wrapped in to prevent scratching, all I could do was smile. The laptop is very slim with a very nice feeling brushed metal lid and base. I will say, the exterior is prone to oil from your hands, leaving noticeable handling marks; when wiped with a microfiber towel, they do disappear, so I would not be too concerned with that. The hinge is plastic but feels solid and you can open the laptop with one hand without the bottom rising up. The entire inside portion of the laptop where you rest your wrists is a very nice feeling rubberized, soft touch plastic. Like the brushed metal lid and bottom, it is susceptible to staining from your hands but again, it wipes off with a microfiber towel.

The keyboard, with its sexy red back lighting that has two brightness levels and off, is a joy to use and does have some flex but only when exerting a significant and unrealistic amount of force on it. The layout of the keyboard is good and the keys feel okay to type on but not great. The reason that I say it's not great to type on might be due to the fact that I use a mechanical keyboard every day. Overall, the keys have a decent amount of travel and provide a slight audible feedback and are not too mushy. I am satisfied with them.

The screen does exhibit some contortion when I put my hands on opposing corners and bend it in opposite directions .  Although flex is present, there is no creaking and it feels well built. The glossy black trim surrounding the screen does take away from the overall appearance. The rest of the laptop feels and looks very premium except for this section. When looking at the reflections in it, you can see the plastic trim is not completely flat. You cannot notice it unless you are looking and I bet this is the case for any laptop with a plastic trim around the screen but I thought I would point it out. One last little gripe, the trim does seem to be vulnerable to scratching so I would be careful when wiping fingerprints off. Overall, the trim is a very minor detail and the laptop still looks great.

I'm not sure what you mean by system flex but if you are talking about the base of the laptop where the keyboard and hardware are located, it is very well built. There is a slight amount of flex observed but only when a great deal of effort is exerted. It's nothing to be concerned about.

Benchmarks -

Sorry but as of right now I an unable to help you. I bought this computer for the 3D modeling I am going to be using in school so I have not done any gaming on it and I'm trying to refrain from downloading too many distractions onto it. I'm sure you could look up a benchmark of the 860m and get a good idea of that kind of performance it will offer.

That's all I have for now. I'll try to update this or respond back to you tomorrow with some battery information. If there is any specific game you want go ahead an tell me and if I have it, I'll test it out.

and....sorry for stealing the OP's thread :P

Im working on a review. Im still testing the thing out.

So far I am no impressed with the screen at all... :(

The viewing angles are terrible and it does in fact seem like a TN panel.
