The best way to deal with scalpers is to ignore the scalpers.

You should be able to reserve a controller on Steam now. You'll get an email once you can order yours

Yeah I’ve already reserved one yesterday but it’s very inconvenient to a lot of people that they now have to wait weeks for something that more people could have if scalpers weren’t scalping.

Yeah, but at least this new order system should stop more from being scalped and you'll be able to order one eventually, rather than having to recheck all the time only to find them continuously out of stock.

And the fewer people buy from scalpers, the better, because they now own something they don't want and can't turn back into money.

My God, what a bunch of absolute negative IQ unemployable losers, there's no other way to put it I swear. Not just with controllers, but with graphics cards, CPUs, RAM, pokémon cards, sports jerseys, anime figurines, anything "new and big" you can think of. Remember toilet paper and bottled water scalpers in 2020?

Most of these chronic thumb suckers probably have no clue what Steam is, or how to use the controller, they just happen to have order placement bots or too much free time and grandpa's retirement funds to "invest" in this stuff, they unironically call it investing like it's stocks and scalping is a "job" (LMAO) then rejoice in ripping off desperate gamers or clueless parents on facebook, the scourge of the internet.

I'll never have the slightest respect or empathy for scalpers. Whenever one gets robbed or beat up and I happen to read about it I get happy.

I just wish they did the whole reserve deal to begin with like they did with the Steam Deck. I really hope they learn from this and do the same with the Steam Machine and Steam Frame. Otherwise there's gonna be a mass amount of very pissed off customers and it negates the whole point of the Steam Machine if it gets scapled.

I wonder how cheaper these things would be if scalpers didn't exist..

I just wanted to buy a steam controller for normal price from steam but this scalper brought 9 and are selling them at 200% price😭😭😭

Blame the dumb fucks you bought the GPU's from scalpers during lockdown. If people would just not buy from these people the world would be a better place. I know in some cases scalpers are being reported to the platform they are selling on, but those rules vary platform to platform. Facebook doesnt seem to have rules that deal with it for these type of items.

Just go threw the reservation process and go on with your life.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

On the other hand, I like the idea of scalpers buying these things at launch and then sitting on their inventory because people can simply buy it at regular price through Steam.

Of course my guess is that there's still enough impatient people to make it worth their while unfortunately 😞

That's why I have little sympathy for the "victims"... I bought my GPU 50 euros over MSRP during the absolute height of the scalping, from a reputable store... these people just don't have the patience or restraint to wait a bit (I was looking for about 2 months btw)

I never stated that it was true or that I was going to purchase anything from the scalper and it’s pretty obvious that it is a scam that it is double normal price or if they are even going to give you anything.

Love how they are selling these before even having them in hands. Fcking scumbags.

At least valve now has a Reservation system, essentially spitting in the face of scalpers and making it easier for people to get one if they wanted one.

Not only does it (somewhat) reduce scalping due to preventing users who already bought one from registering, BUT also prevents scalpers from simply making a new account. Since the account would need to have made a purchase before April 27.

Reservation details:

Reservations will be limited to one Steam Controller per user.

Once you receive an order email, you have three days (72 hours) to make your purchase on Steam.

For now, customers who have already purchased a Steam Controller are not yet eligible to reserve another Steam Controller.

Additionally:

Your account must be in good standing on Steam

You must have made a purchase on Steam prior to April 27, 2026

If it's just a controller, then it should just be available in Walmart for 5$ with underside saying "Made in China"

again, it's just a game controller, an item of little or no significance to the majority of humanity.

I bet they would also be cheaper if people didn't froth at the mouth in anticipation of crap like this as if it was the answer to limitless energy or something.

I'm sure Gabe is lounging on his yacht laughing his fat ass off at all the gamers scrambling to make him richer by buying overpriced and overhyped stuff.

If Gaben was greedy, he'd already raise the price, and he wouldn't offer reservation, and he wouldn't limit it to 1 controller per account.

He could just make more and sell it for higher price-tag and do nothing, but he did something about it.

You do understand 0 of money scalpers make goes to Gaben except the price of the controller?

you miss my point that if people didn't act as if they were going to die if they didn't have this or that new gaming device, the prices of a lot of that stuff would be cheaper.

You see it often here with overly emotional rants or discourses about gaming.

I enjoy gaming as much as anyone, I just don't get as emotionally invested in it as some folks do.

These are controllers, controllers are replaced every 2-3 years if they are cheap, and 5 if they're better. Like I wore through my WIRED xbox 360 USB controller before I wound up swapping it with the Stadia controller (Which was otherwise useless), unfortunately the Stadia controller doesn't work in games that only use xinput unless they go through steam.

Like yes, I'm a little interested in the controller, but I'm not "need it now", I can wait.

Scalpers are sometimes a "necessity" in a market to apply liquidity to to a market, eg re-importing a product that has no official distributor or retail channels. But even then, people buying these to speculate on the value, should find themselves being thrown in the wood chipper. Speculators are always bad, as they extort money and inflate the value of a product to a "what the market will bear", which no longer applying liquidity to the market, but trying to flip something that already has a known value.

That's the the problem a lot of the time. Every time a hot product comes out, eBay, Amazon, retailers, etc, all have to go into anti-scalper/anti-fraud mode. People list empty boxes on eBay, people defraud others by posting the same photos from listings on other ecommerce systems, etc. Ultimately it comes back to buyer be ware. If you want the product and you want the product for the listed price, you MUST wait it out, and hope that the scalpers have to dump it when their speculation fails as more product becomes available.
