Mojang, Why? - Mojang Bans Server Donations for Perks

Geotan

Mojang is banning donations that are for perks in all Minecraft servers.

And to finish it off, here's a link to a post on the official Minecraft Forums for a petition to allow donations for stuff:

This seems ridiculous to me. It seems like the goal is to get rid of the big servers that are abusing donation systems to make profits more than what are donated for and in return giving perks (which I completely agree with) - but is punishing people who are using donation systems to help pay for things relating to the server like the server itself, website, etc. Like some people in the comments of the article have stated, I agree that it is likely no one will donate unless they REALLY, REALLY care about your server without perks (be it a special colored name or some diamonds). And, on the topic of turning donations into "purchases" when you add perks, I saw one person saying donations are like Kickstarter, you pledge (or in this case, donate) and get something in return, while not making the donation a "purchase".

What are your opinions?

Servers cost. No one is forcing these people to run a server.

How I see it.

How I see it.

Sure no one is holding them at gunpoint but i really like those big servers they have all kinds off mini games

i dont pay for it though but people that do just get little bonuses like reserved slots and beta testing of new mini games

and sure there are some people that would donate without getting little benefits but not enough would do it

this is how i see it

No donations -> No money -> No more money for dedicated server hosting -> All huge servers shut down -> No more fun custom coded servers -> All 16 slot, vanilla/small bukkit servers with 15 minute uptimes.

at least put a proper title that somewhat summarizes the main idea of the article.

With some perks costing in the hundreds, this goes beyond beta testing and is exploitation. You know the rules in just about everything in life. A few greedy people ruin it for all and Mojang now wants all servers to be purely donation based only. Mine craft is not that expensive of a game. When there is donation for perks only donators get that cost a lot more than the game itself costs, we have a problem. I think if said perks weren't so high on the "this costs several times more than the game itself", this would have never became this big an issue in the first place.

A few people always ruin things for the majority.

Like I said on the other thread this is nothing new: Old MMOs like Ultima Online and even WoW have custom private servers that alter drop rates and add modified items and sell em as donation rewards. The difference is that unlike Minecraft (to my knowledge) they do offer official servers for a monthly fee. A game that depends on it's users to run perpetual, high capacity servers just needs some form of revenue stream, it's on their best interest to allow this and add for a small % of kickback instead.

unless they allow listen servers, this will absolutely kill multiplayer servers.

Unless mojang can detect the servers that are doing this than this is the only way to do it. The bad eggs always ruin it for the good ones

EDIT: Probably not the ONLY way but for now, it is.
