My thoughts

Those of us of a certain age were around when Anand was still at AnandTech and it was one of the early sites that helped me along my PC enthusiast journey. But the site, and the world, has changed a lot over time. It doesn't seem like this type of written article is sufficiently profitable to keep going. For the past decade or so, Ian Cutress was the stand out editor and provided a high standard for (x86) CPU related content. When he left, despite Ryan and Gavin's best efforts, the difference was noticeable and I was thinking if they don't get someone of a high calibre, it wasn't going to end well. But there's no money for that and here we are today.

Wow, end of an era... RIP.

 

In a way I'm glad they're going to preserve the site as it sits. There are too many dead brands in the online journalism space that are limped along Weekend at Bernie's style by venture capital firms and publishers until they've extracted all the brand equity and sold the remains for scrap.

I sold my soul for ProSupport.

It's sad and I expect others to follow suit as the current, seo garbage infested, ai vomit polluted internet has made it impossible to host quality niche journalism outside of the main platforms. Hopefully their staff all find good places to work next.

I have been reading and been following AnandTech since the early 2000's... when I got a job that allowed me to start building and upgrading my own PC. Every article they ever wrote was a god-send for people like me who were unsure of the how and what to buy in the PC space. 

 

So it's a little sad, but at the same time, I can understand them closing down. My own consumption of tech news/entertainment has shifted significantly over the years from AnandTech to LTT and other channels, and obviously, this has been the overall trend as well.

Sad to see. Anandtech was essential when I was building my first PC and learning about the parts. I loved their charts and in-depth reviews at a time when it was hard to find that level of content.
Maybe if we're very lucky, someone with good intentions will pick it up. Future let Kevin get CrackBerry back after all.

Anandtech had a few issues:

It missed the print to video transition and podcasting.
It abandoned the engineering/in depth focus.  (Given the same company owned Toms Hardware and Anand Tech, it was silly for both to be lowest common denominator content for maximum audience size)

Nothing has to last forever.  AnandTech was mismanaged, and because of that new outlets like LTT, GN, etc have risen to fill the void.

The days of reading over the brand-new Westmere-EX, pondering what the heck I would do with 10 cores, while I was supposed to be doing algebra in my college class. Where did the time go?

 

Nowadays though, I often have Chips and Cheese open on my work computer. So some things don’t change. 😆

In the latter years the site rarely came out when searching some news/reviews from Google. 

Used to read Anandtech in late 2000-s, early 2010-s quite often. But after that it seems i forgot it, and perhaps so did Google...

What if "building PCs" is the new "being able to repair a car engine" and it gets more and more niche in the coming years?

 

What if this shift in interest (and, thus, money) begins from written reviews sites but then also hits video/podcast content creators?

 

In the age of everything-is-soldered and all-encompassing-system-on-chips, what's the future of "PC part picking" and researching?

I haven’t seen anyone else really mention SEO. Unless I appended “Anandtech” to a search I just flat out didn’t see any anandtech articles. The last while I’ve had to actively search out their articles.

In general, rapid gratification seems to be the name of the game. Even video and podcasts aren’t immune, as it’s hard to get longer form content to stick outside your core audience.

Yes and no. It does seem that management by its owners set it on a death spiral but there isn't anything really taking over from what it did during AT's best days. I do not see LTT and GN as direct competitors as the target audience level is quite different, with these two more focusing on the gamer-adjacent types. It wasn't just about today's products but also near future technologies, which I've yet to see any video channel cover in any way beyond a vague mention if they happen across it at a trade show. Maybe that's a different problem. The number of people who like the really in depth tech stuff might just not be enough to sustain it.

This is heartbreaking. Really, really sad news, but honestly, Anandtech has just been a shadow of its former self for the last couple of years.

 

Most of their key writers had left, and while they still had a few dedicated ones, the amount of content being put out was quite low, and at times, rather lackluster. This wasn't a sudden death, it's been a slow decline over the last 10 years (it was exactly 10 years ago that Anand left), with the decline really accelerating in the last 5 or so.

 

When you have such highly knowledgeable people, it's not surprising that they get snapped up by companies. Apple "took" Anand himself, Brian Klug, Brandon Chester, and Joshua Ho. NUVIA/Qualcomm "took" Andrei Frumusanu. Samsung "took" Kristian Vättö.

 

There are probably several others I’m forgetting, and some who went on to do other things, like Ian Cutress with his consulting firm.

 

What I find really sad, and as the demise of Anandtech proves, is that the "cable TV-ification" of the web seems inevitable. I don’t necessarily believe that Anandtech was mismanaged and that’s why it went under. I sadly suspect it’s because the market has shifted. The balance that Anand said he’d be happy with no longer exists.

 

While I sometimes look down on content that veers towards the "sensationalistic garbage" end of the spectrum (like making exaggerated faces, being loud and obnoxious, and using attention-grabbing titles that are borderline misleading), I too have been content as long as there was balance. However, it feels like it has become harder and harder to find proper, in-depth articles anymore.

 

In the end, it's not just the loss of Anandtech that hurts, it's what it represents. A website that was once a beacon of in-depth, high-quality tech journalism has fallen victim to the changing tides of online content. As we see more and more sites succumb to the pressures of sensationalism and clickbait, it's important to remember the value of thoughtful, well-researched articles. I hope that somewhere down the line, there will be a renewed appreciation for this kind of content, and we can find a new balance that allows sites like Anandtech to thrive once more. Until then, we can only hope that the passion for deep, meaningful tech analysis finds a new home.

 

Good bye Anandtech. You will be missed.

For some reason I have never followed AnandTech. I knew they were highly regarded in this industry, but didn't specifically follow their articles. Usually my search on reviews for SSD's and disks landed me on AnandTech. I think my last purchase, the FireCuda 530 4TB was based on their review, but I landed there through search engine for that product specifically. I used to stick around Guru3D back in the day, but stopped because the owner of it has issues with himself. TechPowerUp as European outlet is still most relevant to me since they follow pricing in our region more directly in relation to performance that products offer and I love their knowledge databases like VGA BIOS database and their drivers and DLSS archive. Super useful. Their reviews are also very in depth and the way they present them are just the right that I usually need. I prefer to look at graphs in peace and not be forced with the video format even if you can pause the video. Which is why LTT reviews are more of entertainment for what I already sort of know opposed to being first go to stop for info. But I'm not a casual user so I'm not a core audience anyway.

 

Ultimately, it's unfortunate that AnandTech is going away. It's always a bit sad to see almost legendary level enthusiast outlets going away. In the end, the more reliable outlets there are, the better decisions users can make about products and since not all review all things, this is important.

This was the error the management made.  

Turns out, LOTS of people care about using tech to play games and stuff, but don't really care about it beyond getting the best or best value or parts that can do X for $, and lots of the traffic for written articles and now videos, is people looking to make a buying choice and doing research, and a large part of the audience picks watching video over reading articles.

Many if not most people want to watch a video, get the information and buy online and have it shipped to their home to enjoy, they don't want to reach pages and pages about CPUs and GPUs.  They want Linus and others to say, "Here are the new chips and heres how they preform, buy what you want!".  Some people (me) are so lazy they are even happy to buy with an affiliate link.

Anandtech has been such a great source, im glad that they are keeping the articles up for everyone to read for now. I hate video sources past launch windows due to searchability. GN refocusing on text and eventually some day LTT labs will help fill in the gaps.

Long form video probably gets it worse than written content in that regard. The only people that watch long videos on YouTube are the dedicated audience to the channel who watch them all but getting new dedicated audience is extremely challenging and visibility of this content is almost nonexistent.

 

I remember a time when YouTube used to recommend to me 1-2 documentary videos, not at all for a while now.
