Gaming Laptop or Steam Deck?

So my current gaming laptop has kinda died (keyboard is borked on it and cba to take it apart and fix it) and i was thinking about replacing it; my laptop was always a backup to my desktop or to use if i'm travelling

 

However i had a thought today of given that i mainly use it for gaming would it be worth actually not replacing the laptop and just getting a Steam deck?

 

Given that my budget for a replacement laptop was gonna be around £1000 anyway

 

My understanding is that ANY steam game can work on the steam deck (Might require a bit of tweaking but i'm sure there are guides for that)

steam has classifications on the catalog:

- verified to work out the box

- requires tweaking

- untested

 

on that note, there's a very big difference between "mainly for gaming", and "only for gaming".

 

the steamdeck isnt exactly a very usable productivity device.

Thinking back to the past 4 times i used my laptop they were all for gaming, with 1 exception. When i moved house

Basically view the steamdeck as a nintendo switch 99.99% of the time. Games only thats it pretty much.

 

Is that acceptable?

 

Keep in mind a lot of multiplayers games dont work due to their anticheat.

 

Else well also for the price of 1000 pounds you can have a 4060 laptop and sometimes a last gen better 3070 laptop. Which are both WAY faster than the steamdeck. Keep in mind the steamdeck is all about compromises with performance and framereat

I tend to play RPGs anyway so limited multiplayer isn't that bad for me, especially when i'd be travelling

If all you need is gaming then I'd go for a steam deck or other alternatives like the legion go. Just remember that the performance with the devices currently struggles to keep up with even budget laptops but the portability is what sets it apart. Being able to easily use it on public transportations or just out on a bench etc.

Get a refurb.  My GF loves her Steam Deck, and I use it occasionally.    It's a compromise, of course, but for $360 for the 512GB OLED model... really can't be beat for gaming.

 

Everything from New World, Palia, Enshrouded, etc. we've played and it's really worth it.
