Where are people getting high quality media for home cinema (not pirate)

So I am looking to build up my own media library but this being 2023 i dont have a blueray player and i dont really want to get a whole bunch of them. So were are people buying and then downloading LEGALLY high quality media such as 4k and HDR?

Edit:

just downloaded "best quality" from prime and its looks like trash so as per comments think am going to have to get a blueray player and rip and stuff so next question is what blueray player is good for this (I am in the UK)

You answered your own question. People legally obtain high quality copies by ripping bluerays

There is no option for that. Either you buy the DVD/Blu-Ray and rip it yourself, or you go the other route.

 

There is no GOG/Bandcamp for movies.

only option i have found is prime does most of there movies in 4k HDR but i wont rather not just hand amazon more money and i dont even know what there download quality is

Disney+ does HDR 4k with a better HDR standard then blurays
But the bit rate is still less for the rest of the quality.

Unfortunatly bluray HDR is just HDR10. no 10+, or dolby vision or HLG.

And now you know why the big studios all moved to streaming - gets much harder to have your own copy of the media if all you ever pay for is a renewable license to watch theirs.

Gotta put in the work and the $$$ if you want to circumvent that system.

If your case has a 5.25" slot then it's a $90 initial outlay ($60 for a blu-ray drive and $30 for a copy of makeMKV) + ~15 minutes to flash the firmware, then you're good to rip any blurays or DVDs you acquire. Not too terrible.

Well at least if you have a physical copy and rip it, you will always have it. If you rent it from some service there is nothing that says they won't remove it from your library or shutdown later down the road.

100% this the sony move has me wanting to get hard copies of some stuff just incase its taken off netflex prime so on so on just wanted to be able to buy and download them from somewere and not have to mess about with blueray

Grab an Enterprise HDD of 8TB or more and start ripping Blu-ray.

 

I think if you have a PS3, and it is modded to use custom firmware, you can RIP data from Blu-rays that way saving money, but it is a slow drive, then FTP the data from the PS3 to your PC via Ethernet.

I download 1080p and let my upscaler do the work.

You're not going to find legit downloadable digital copies of movies unless they're public domain. All the studios will either make you stream them, or they'll encumber the files with DRM. If you want DRM-free digital copies, you'll have to make them yourself from discs.

 

If you want to store discs so they take up as little room as possible, get some empty 100-disc spindles and only keep the discs. For DVDs, you can get comic book style plastic sleeves that hold the case art and disc.

 

I know from experience you can cram 8 discs into a 14mm stacker DVD case. (The used copies of Deep Space Nine and Voyager I bought came in their original packaging, but it was all beat up and missing half the slipcovers.) Trayless 14mm 4-disc cases will fit all four discs from a season of The Simpsons and the little booklet that comes with it, too.

None of those are what I would call "high quality".  Their 4K versions are more like standard Bluray bitrates and they're all DRM so you can't download to a NAS for example.

I'd be very cautious with storage as I've noticed a lot of Blurays are a lot less scratch-proof than they used to be.

Well yeah, but his question didn't have an answer so this is the next best.

 

If he can afford to buy 4K movies to download, he can afford Amazon Prime or any of the others.

Yeah, the effects were blurry for me on legit source and not as legit source.

 

I despise the cost cutting hurry up vfx that studios are pushing.

even the opening scenes the faces are blurry and the cars are so blurry couldnt even tell the make or model and in a film thats "about cars" thats just dumb

dont have a 5.25" bay in my PC but for the amount of time am using it i can just take the side of my case plug it in and off to the races i have never done this so can u help me out

Is HLG better supported on TVs these days anyway?  When I got my LG C1 they were pretty much the only manufacturer supporting it.

 

I've certainly been impressed with His Dark Materials, Dr Who and Planet Earth III on iPlayer.  The problem is other streaming services the quality seems to vary from title to title.  For example on Netflix they tend to do an excellent job encoding Strange Things but movies in general are usually pretty crap.  That's ignoring the fact audio on all streaming services is a steaming pile of garbage compared to Bluray, and the downloads from those services is identical quality to the streaming versions.

 

It drives me insane that displays are getting better and better quality, but the content we are feeding to them is getting worse and worse as they try to save money on storage/bandwidth by pushing the bitrates as low as possible.
