The MakeMKV forums has a flash guide with a list of compatible drives: https://forum.makemkv.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=19634. I use the LG WH14NS40. You just pop in your disc, tell MakeMKV to take a gander at it, select what you want it to rip. Usually the main file is listed twice, and then there's some smaller files if there's additional features on the drive. Though on stuff like my Kingdom of Heaven Blu-Ray there was the theatrical release and the directors cut, I selected both based off the size (director's cut being longer, it's slightly larger file size) and ripped those.

Is HLG better supported on TVs these days anyway?  When I got my LG C1 they were pretty much the only manufacturer supporting it.

I've certainly been impressed with His Dark Materials, Dr Who and Planet Earth III on iPlayer.  The problem is other streaming services the quality seems to vary from title to title.  For example on Netflix they tend to do an excellent job encoding Strange Things but movies in general are usually pretty crap.  That's ignoring the fact audio on all streaming services is a steaming pile of crap compared to Bluray, and the downloads from those services is identical quality to the streaming versions.

I think I had that idea of bluray discs not supporting dolby vision stuck in my head because its also completely optional on the Blu-ray player side. Such as the ps5 plays HDR10 blurrays, but dolby vision disks (If its encoded for it) has to fall back into HDR10 mode.

I think almost all HDR TVs support HLG

I hate the whole ecosystem I have to say. HDR has always been the more interesting upgrade than 4k ever was in terms of making video content look amazing, but holy hell.

Good brush up for me, and anyone else.

Streaming is always a mess 😕

If you're ripping UHD Blurays then yeah, only a few drives support that as physical media on PC was already dead by the time that was a thing.  Its a minor miracle they even released any drives that can do it.

I only generally do so to check the media isn't damaged, had a few broken from the factory.  I prefer to play disks from a dedicated player as the picture quality seems to be better from my Bluray player than any device I've tried.  It always seems slightly blurry in comparison.

I have had that once so far, I cannot rip my Solo (the star wars one) Blu-Ray, it just returns an error. I got it for $5 from Dollar General tho so no biggie.

What really pained me is I imported Strange Things 1 from the US and one of the disks was scratched by the stupid cardboard packaging.  It wont play or rip.  Its when I realised they aren't making them as robust as they used to.

Early Blurays were incredibly hard to scratch.

Mind you, I prefer more fragile disks to the fact most TV shows aren't released at all any more.  The fact shows shot in HD or even 4K with HDR are only being released on DVD, if at all, is just wrong.

Then there are older shows like CSI which random seasons got a Bluray release, but they never bothered to release them all.  To make matters worse, its not available on any streaming service in the UK.  Paramount+ only has later seasons.  Then they wonder why people turn to the high seas.

I RIP disks too.

I heard some new movies/shows aren't being released on disk, but personally I don't care since I find most new movies/shows to not be all that great, hence why I've long since cancled Disney+ and Netflix.

The movie studios would probably disagree with it, but if you want to pay for the film but keep a digital copy on Jellyfin/Emby/Plex you can just buy the physical copy and then either rip it yourself or find a preripped encode.

Then you can just stick your discs in a binder.
