I'm Embarrassed For Her...

Plouffe

Thanks ASUS for sponsoring today’s video! Check out the ROG Swift OLED PG27AQDM at https://lmg.gg/PG27AQDM

Yvonne's sister Esther needed some help with the family computer, so of course she called Linus. Well it turns out it needed a lot more than a light dusting and some minor tweaks, so he built her a new PC on one condition: we get to roast her current PC first.

Check out the parts used in Esther’s new PC!

At the risk of sounding dumb, can someone clarify the veggie sub story?  Did not follow....

(Second watch: She asked for a veggie sub when it should have been obvious Linus had brown-bagged tuna?)

why didnt you just get a z690 board? then you could've had nvme raid, overclocking, and ddr5 for like 300 bucks

Either because that's what ASUS sent or because they had this one lying around.

It would be ridiculously overkill (just like ALL of these "flagship" motherboards). He would pay a lot more for NO tangible benefit whatsoever.

My friend came to me with a PC parts list recommended by forum guys with all the high end overclocking  and ddr5 capable parts when all he needed is a 5600 + whatever B MB as he's going for 1080p 60hz gaming.

Sometimes PCMR guys dont realise normies dont need/use all that power

No, most people may not need it but b760 (13th gen "budget") boards are the same price or more than z790s (12th gen "high end") with less features, whats the benefit in paying the same amount for less?  The main reason I suggested it is because they gave her two sata drives in raid 1, with a z790 board they could've done two nvme drives in raid one for more of less the same cost and have a much more responsive machine in the end.  No, she doesnt need nvme but it makes a huge difference in the overall "snappiness" of the machine and, imo, would 100% be worth it if planning to use a machine for more than a few years.  The only downside would be needing to flash the bios for 13th gen support but that's only a one time deal.

just to be clear, I'm not angry or anything, just kinda curious why they went b760

overall, this video was a great watch 😄

No offence, I dont mean you when I said "PCMR guys". 😂

All the benefits that you mentioned wont affect her in any way significant. She's not going to notice the additional snappiness. I'm guessing the reason they gave her these parts is because this is what they have in their storage. If you're buying new and they are the same price, sure go ahead and buy but LTT is not going to 'waste' 2 nvme drives and a higher end MB on someone who's not going to notice it.

I recently upgraded from sata ssd to nvme ssd and I cant tell any major difference lol.

most users wont.

but but direct storage...

they will never get off the ground if not for certain storage standards.

Esther has a very nice screen presence, even manages to make Linus look good.

I like the idea of building a machine for extreme reliability, it would be interesting to see if has the same longevity as her old build. Sad that they didn't use the old case, that was my dream case back in the day!

@LinusTech

I'm guessing you didn't realize it at the time.  But you set your sister-in-law up with Crucial's budget tier DRAMless ssds.  The MX500 would make more sense with it's longer warranty and dram cache

also remember he gave her a 13600k and a 4070 ti for minecraft, they could've done a $350 5600g apu system and I guarantee no one would notice the difference in game 🤣

It was a sponsored advertisement for Asus products including the Asus ROG Strix B760-I motherboard, Asus TUF RTX 4070Ti, Asus ROG Thor PSU, and Asus ROG Swift monitor that were used in the video. It's likely that the 4070ti and B760 motherboard were just the products that the sponsor wanted to advertise.

Linus also mentioned in the video that the goal was for the PC to last the next 10 years, and even though the parts used are overkill for what she is using it for it does mean it should be longer before needing to upgrade than with a 5700G APU budget build.

The 13600k was likely based off of the GPU they were using. 13600k is a decent choice to go with a 3070ti, and if they went with a slower CPU people in the comments would be screaming bottleneck "Why did you pair a 4070Ti with an i3 13100!! It's going to bottleneck the graphics card!!".

In my experience there's not that much noticeable difference between SATA and NVMe drives in terms of snappiness. They're both pretty fast. When I upgraded from SATA SSD to NVMe I didn't notice any difference. That may change when things like DirectStorage start to get implemented in to games, but just for general desktop use I don't see much difference between the two.

I guess I'm kindof biased, I use many heavy programs since I do a lot of 3d modeling work. blender, freecad, solidworks and a few others which do load significantly faster on an nvme drive.  I suppose for webbrowsing and light gaming nvme isnt that big of a deal.
