Do you care if your PC is on during Thunderstorms (powersurge)

LarsReviews

I had alot of Thunderstorms with high winds in the last couple of days. (R.I.P(Pieces) the 20 meter tree in my backyard and the neighbours fence) haha

I always leave my PC and TV on, because my files are in a surge proof space and power surges are really rare. What do you do, unplug or don't care?

Aren't decent PSUs surge protected? As in a surge won't kill components it might only kill the PSU?

Yes, the surge protection in a PSU will keep the power level constant. If it is a huge surge, there is a change the PSU will automatically shut itself down if it cannot protect your components from such a huge power surge. But for such a huge power surge to happen, it will most likely hit your breakers first before getting to your PC. Only cheap PSUs will die in a power surge.

I do worry at times but I have a backup pc I can assemble fairly fast if my current one goes bust. I should really consider buying a UPS....

I live in Florida so my power goes out about twice a week. :(

Unless the storm is really bad then I just leave it running.

This is one of the reasons why I constantly have to reinstall windows.

If it's that bad, it'll blow the breaker before it gets near your computer.

Find a way to fake a massive power surge that fries all your electronics during a thunderstorm....

My grandfather did that, he is dead so they can't punish him anymore. He fryed his TV and they actually got a new one for 1k €. That was like 10 years ago.

I have never had a problem with leaving it on. So that's pretty much what I do.

Oh and this seems appropriate.

I have it off during them. But considering we have one major thunderstorm every 4 years or so I don't think it is in much danger if it is left on.

I leave my main rig and my folding rig on 24/7 regardless of weather. All of my electronics are plugged into a surge protection power-strip, which is plugged into yet another surge protection power-strip. I'd like to see some power surge make it through both of them, and I really mean it because these power-strips cover up to $30000 in damages if they fail.  :D

I can't remember which PC expert it was, could've sworn it was JJ or Paul, but they said something like a surge protector thing "expires" or runs out of it's protection after some years.

Or did I just dream that up
