There is a video on YouTube explaining how it works. I posted it somewhere in this thread. For example, the "fake sponsorship" thing. I can imagine that even tech-savvy people can fall for those sometimes.

Wait what?  I'm pretty sure you need at least the old password to change the password.   Like normally.  The hackers have to be doing something out of the ordinary.  

IF one could just click change password and not enter anything you'd have a point.  I know this because I have to change it for my forgetful old mother all the time.

I do hope everything works out and that the stress hasn't been too life shortening. Since there is no way that this is not an extremely stressful thing to deal with when you have a small Army of people to worry about.

Same as with Apple ID, as long as you have gained "trusted" sign in, they won't ask twice while changing the security options because it would be "inconvenient and hard for common users to input their login credentials multiple times".

It would be pretty funny if youtube wasn't taking the channels down for the hack but because Tesla did a copyright strike... I could see them doing that.

The channel was down, a stream watcher might not notice for a bit because YouTube didn’t force down the stream too. YouTube isn’t known for being fast acting usually

Sometimes, you don’t have to type the old password to change it, which scammers take advantage of. This has been an issue for years, and it’s unfortunate that it takes enough big channels getting compromised for Google to take action (or not).

I think it was one of Linus's other channels. I just assessed the account like 10 mins ago.
