China doesn't want me to have this GPU - Moore Threads MTT S80

AdamFromLTT

China is tired of the US lording it's semiconductor knowledge over them, which is why they've invested over a trillion dollars in tech projects to make the nation more than just a manufacturer, but a full fat chip-maker. Meet the Moore Threads MTT S80, which is made using Chinese silicon. There isn't AMD, or Nvidia or even Intel behind the chip that is in the beauty... but how does it perform? Let's find out.

Get ready for the pro-China hackers to take down LTT. I hope Linus is prepared for DDOS.

Pretty impressive given that they've only been around for 2 years. More competition in the GPU space is great for everyone tbh.

Wonder if this runs better on linux, they would most certainly be using more open source code if they need to rush a card out.

He's gotten away at least twice, once during the steam china debacle and then the blitzchung thing and the countless WAN show criticism on anything socialist related. Honestly the chinese hololive TL team from years back could learn a thing or two.

Given the company are also making server-grade cards, I'd be curious if there was anything on said cards, that might "phone home".

I feel the GPU really wasn't given a fair shake, limited games notwithstanding, no formal benchmarks were run, and that's shoddy reporting.

NOTE: I no longer frequent this site. If you really need help, PM/DM me and my e.mail will alert me.

It seems that it was not for lack of trying...

Since only a limited number of games were supported it wouldn't surprise me if game benchmarks wouldn't run either.

Saying this isn´t a threat to other manufacturers because it´s in the mid-low range is false imo. People buy WAY more x600 xx60 cards than higher tier ones. Outside the enthusiast bubble 500$ is already a lot for a GPU. Still won´t be a huge thread for now due to limited usability but in the future it might be, especially if they do start exports.

They went from nothing (excluding a lot of former Nvidia knowledge from their founder and reportedly many engineers) to basically an AMD HD 6870/Nvidia GTX 480 with 16 GB of RAM in 2 years. That's not a good GPU by modern standards, but it's still a lot of progress. Bit of a shame about the whole "only 17 motherboards even boot and good luck finding compatible software lol" thing.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

My 12 years old HD 6970 gets double the performance and can play DX11 games without any issues...

This new GPU performs as well as Vega 11/GT 1030/GTX 460/GTX 280/HD 7770 GHz Edition...

All Linux games support either Vulkan or OpenGL - If those APIs don't work well then you will have a hard time playing games on Linux...

A fair point on the non-game stuff. I feel that having such a rare GPU deserves a much more in-depth video, showing driver install, error reports (and possible causes/fixes) postulations on why it runs slowly, the backstory on my only certain motherboards are supported, and so forth.

This was a slap-dash video that basically boiled down to "lol China GPU bad!" without showing your work on why.

Basically, I'm disappointed in this video, it should have been twice to three times the length it was

True, I also think that they should have tested Vulkan and OpenGL because this GPU supports them,

And see how it works on Linux.

I absolutely despise the presentation of this video.

This is cringe and it feels so low effort that i almost thought i was watching one of those 'world war 3 is coming tomorrow!!1!' kinda channels. The worst part is that the actual video (with this filth ripped out) is actually good. This presentation feels mind-numingly bad, and dare i say it, almost targeted at braindead mouthbreathers.

If this is the price of growth or engagement, then the means dont justify the ends.

Disgusting.

Care to elaborate? I think he was pretty balanced in his presentation of a Chinese product, surprisingly balanced for a Westerner ;).

I would have loved some kind of counters at the bottom counting "Times viewer called Linus a ccp shill" and "Times viewer called Linus a western media shill" before the end.

System Specs: Second-class potato, slightly mouldy

The point clearly isn't to be a threat right now, but to iterate towards being a threat. It's clear the US is using import bans to protect its interests and developing domestic GPUs in China is a strategic response to that. They don't even have to beat the other offerings, just come close enough to not suffer from any ban.

  • 3 months later...

So I did some tests with this card using a custom Forward+ Unity3D RenderPipeline between Ubuntu 20.04 and Windows 10.

<<< NOTES >>>

* Ubuntu 20.04 is required for driver to work otherwise I would have used 22.04

* Using AMD CPU that supports PCIE 5.0 and Windows 10 thread scheduler correctly (as Intel 12th/13th E-Core chips do not)

<<< Hardware >>>

* AMD Ryzen 7600X

* RAM: DDR5 5600mhz

* Motherboard: ASUS ROG Strix B650E-I Gaming WiFi 6E (PCIE-5.0 for GPU)

* MTT-S80 GPU

<<< Windows 10 Results >>>

D3D11: 300-420fps

<<< Ubuntu 20.04 Results >>>

OpenGL: 400-500fps

Vulkan: 550-900fps

I should note D3D11 on Windows 10 is more stable in these tests. However this is very promising for Linux if future Vulkan drivers can improve and target newer Ubuntu versions. (and they really need to be doing this in MESA driver stack [not the Nvidia driver path they're choosing])

O and here is a picture of the setup. The fan color actually looks orange in real life not red like the picture.

Also modified case to have better cooling because the GPU generates a lot of heat.

The Z100 DCU (Deep Computing Unit) is an obscure GPU for AI produced by a joint venture between AMD and the Chinese company Haiguang. It has 32GB, runs PyTorch but not TF, and has 3840 cores. There isn't anything on Twitter or even Wikipedia about it so I thought I'd share. People claim it's just slightly slower than the 4090, but very hard to get. They were using it on WAIC Shanghai 2023, 3 weeks ago.v2-1032c17b47390a969157234913b96046_r.jpg
