I booked a home on VRBO for thursday to tuesday for $1400 CAD. originally i had booked a similar home for the same tIme period for $800 CAD but they delisted the property to cancel my reservation and relist it for that price nightly.

It seems like a lot of these rental properties have raised there rates knowing how sold out everything is in the area.

This is generally why I avoid AirBNB and similar services.  Say what you will, Marriott isn't gonna cancel my reservation so they can sell the room to someone else for more money. 😛

I ended up having to change my stay and had to re-book. I was able to move to the Moda Hotel, a bit more expensive but a bit closer.

Edit: moved again, found for a bit more expensive another slightly closer hotel at the Blue Horizon Hotel

Honestly, I'd say that all of Downtown Vancouver is reasonably walkable to the convention centre, unless you're doing the LAN and have to lug a PC around.  But if you're in that far, taxis exist for a reason.  The core downtown the most you'll walk is 25mins.  If you can't walk that far to the centre, you're not going to survive the hours walking around inside the centre.

I had to reschedule for other reasons, and conveniently found a place closer. But just for walking time, not worth the extra $100 a night to save 2 minutes each direction.

Have you tried restarting it?

It would be entirely feasible to charter a cruise ship and sell tickets to the cabins for the days of the event. It would depend on whether the cruise ship terminal would rent out a berth for the time cheap enough.

At that point wouldn't it be cheaper to hold the event on the ship itself? Not that this is a bad idea, this would bump.

It would have to be one of the largest ships, they have a max allowable number of people on at a time.

Did you try looking at AirBnB? Much better deals and much prettier locations. I have not stayed at a hotel in years.

I found that a hostel was the way to go for me. It was about $40 a night when I made my reservation.

I've heard horror stories about AirBNBs where you have to do the owner's laundry and watch their dog and stuff. I don't want to risk dealing with that. Maybe next year when I try and do this a bit more cost effectively I'll check it out.

Just thought I'd add my 2 cents, if you have proof (e.g text messages, physical paper notices, etc.) that they're requesting you do more then was listed or is generally deemed appropriate (like taking out your trash for example) then you can always contact AirBnB support (as they've been known to be somewhat helpful in certain cases) or even dispute the charge on your Credit Card since one could make the argument that you didn't really get what you paid for, but whether that's something you'd want to risk is up to you 🙂

Keep in mind that I am sometimes wrong, so please correct me if you believe this is the case!

I don't know if I may have made a grave mistake, but I booked a bed at a hostel. Name is Samesun Vancouver. Anybody know if I should start panicking?

The main thing is that you're leaving that Hostel with everything you own.  Unlike a hotel, you can't just 'leave your stuff there' until you checkout.  If you leave the Hostel mid day to go to LTX, you better have everything on you.

I certainly planned it that way. Everything I need to bring with me is going in my backpack. Might even pick up an LTT backpack while I'm there and use that to ship con swag home in the checked baggage compartment.
