Should I go for 3840x1080 or 5120x1440 on a 32:9 super ultrawide ?

Nm, get the 1440p monitor.  Glossed over the 3080Ti part. Sorry.

I am currently using a 1080p 24" 165Hz 16:9 monitor and I have never used anything above 1080p. I am planning on getting a RTX 3080 Ti 12GB and I wanted to get a new monitor and I've always been a fan of ultrawides and super ultrawides even though I haven't ever experienced them in real life .

Now my question is which resoultion should I choose from the two above, keep in mind that they are 49" in both resolutions, will the 3840x1080 look bad and will 5120x1440 be really hard to push even with a RTX 3080 Ti, I know its a little bit easier to run than 4K. And my mind is currently on a Samsung Odyssey G9 ( Non Neo because it's a lot more expensive where I live )

My current PC specs are :

GPU : RTX 3060 Ti 8GB

CPU : Ryzen 5 5600

RAM : 16GB DDR4 3600Mhz

I would look at this first. Just so you know what you are getting yourself into. Also has some info that is good to know if you plan on going through and buying a super ultrawide.

Hmm. It's not that hard. This makes it seem like UW is plagued with issues and compatibility problems, but it's really not.

Never saw the original comment, but if it was the power it'd take to drive, I'd just have lowered the settings (or going 16:9) for more demanding games before going to 1080p on a monitor of that size.

Yes, I had commented that the 3060TI can't push that 1440p SUW, it's over 7mil pixels.  Scaling down until you can get a better GPU would do tghe trick, I've just never done that for that reason.

I mean, it can. Just depends on the title. On a rough average the 3060Ti can push it at ~65fps. Not super, but lower some settings and it'll go up. Restrict it to 16:9 and you'll be just fine.

Though, I also assume most people use 32:9 for the multi tasking aspect and then game as a secondary use, so I could be just as wrong 🤷‍♂️😂

I mean I have heard from multiple ultrawide users especially super ultrawide the compatibility is hit or miss for games and alot of games do not support the resolution. Sure you can still play games at 16by9 on the ultrawide monitor in the worst case scenario but to pretend that ultrawide support is good is simply disingenuous. Also again like the article said there are third party solutions to these type of issues that may help and it's probably important to know about those solutions if they end up going through and buying the super ultrawide.

Well I guess you happen to play games that support ultrawide monitors. Not everyone does especially if you like to play indie games that don't have the development time or money to support ultrawide.

Yes but that would still be disappointing if you went and bought and ultrawide under the assumption you could play your game at the ultrawide resolution only to have you game end up with black bars making it no better than a normal 16by9 monitor.

In my experience kinda depends on the game. Most perform reasonably well nowadays but sometimes you'll see odd or poorly optimized game elements/features such as UI, FOV, etc. Maybe these weren't what you meant by compat issues tho.

I personally just switched away from UW after many years of use (it was great for the most part tbh), and some of what I said did influence that. It kinda sucks but UW isn't really popular enough for devs to dump significant resources into making it work perfectly :^(

Realistically a lot of those problems aren't the biggest deal to most. UW support is Def better than it was 3 years ago.

Someone told Luke and Linus at CES 2017 to "Unban the legend known as Jerakl" and that's about all I've got going for me. (It didn't work)

The most important question is which games you really focus on? If you have the scratch for sim-racing, ditch any idea of UW and SUW and get a VR headset + Normal 16:9 1440p panel. For anything else outside of racing games UW and SUW is just a waste of money. Most games don't even properly support the resolutions and the few which do, still present more problems than benefits.

You should absolutely go with the 5120x1440, otherwise it's just another 1080p monitor. At bigger sizes, the image will look like crap.
