Mom's against computers

AMD Lover

My parents never bought me a PC game, a piece for my computer or encouraged my hobby in any way.

They closest they got was a desk that I could put my computer on.

I bought it with my own money, the same money that got taxes taken out of and that went towards my car

So my Mom and that of my friend think that we are wasting all of out money on these computers. Whether it be software, hardware, games or modding tools every time i buy something or ask her if i can buy something i always get and heres an example "Well don't you already have a.. whatever you said, graphics card". My response was "Yes... but it doesnt play all of the games at the resolution i want". I usually get a well the one you have works fine or something like that. The same thing happened when i asked if we could buy a new computer for the "Computer Room", it was "well the one we have works fine", uh no, it has 1GB of RAM, a 250GB HDD and a freaking Pentium that sounds like a leaf blower.

Kinda got off topic in there but basically my mom discourages me from buying computer stuff. Do you think this is in her right? I plan to go into a CAREER with computers involved so i see it as i learn something new almost every other day.

Did or does your mom/dad/guardian do the same thing?

Well I got lucky I guess (sort of) cause my Dad does this stuff for a living but he does apples but my mom isn't against me and computer but what I do with them (plays games and DJ of course). Though I always do the same thing as you, I always ask my mom if I could buy this... she's christian so the MSI Gaming edition is out of the question but I respect her and just try to talk with her of your dreams and such.. is this an thing that happens all the time or? Just an one time thing?

The time you enjoy wasting, is not wasted time.

Your mum has a point. Buying a high end graphics card is a total money sink. And what will the gain be? A slightly higher resolution or a few more frames per second? It's a purchase solely for playing games, which comes from desirability not necessity. It's not vital to your future career. You won't learn much from slotting in another gpu and installing some drivers.

This argument is based on the assumption that you already have a reasonably capable gpu.

I totally agree, i love hardware like most of you guys do but i refuse to get anything else in terms of tech untill i save enough money to get my own laptop which will help me when i go to university and by that time i should get a job and earn my own money and do whatever i want with it. (yes my mom bought me my pc but i used the best value components i could find.)

Main PC:

ASUS F1A55-M LX, AMD A6-3500, (2x2)gb Kingston HyperX Blu DDR3 1600mhz, Seagate Barracuda 500gb 7200rpm,

You really can't expect your parents to do anything other than fulfill your basic needs. A high powered computer is not a basic need. If you really want more monetary support for building computers, you can do two things (do both): 1. Find a source of income 2. Give proof of how important a high-powered computer is to you. For the second, start using programs that require a faster computer (Blender, Maya, Unity, UE4, Photoshop, Final Cut, After Affects). If all you want the computer for is gaming, that's a hard sell.

If you show an honest effort in learning to use some of this stuff, it's fairly likely they will support you. This may not come in the form of money, but that's not really the most important thing here.

This. What kids think is needed or "adequate" is often really off what is actually appropriate for IRL. Don't think I don't know this, I was a teenager once who wanted things too. Respect your mom, she sounds like she's trying to be reasonable, and don't think she doesn't understand, she was a kid once too.

My parents never bought me a PC game, a piece for my computer or encouraged my hobby in any way.

@LinusTech, I am growing up the same way. An enthusiast on a Celeron M.

I appreciate the wireless HP membrane keyboard, S200HL on VGA, ThinkPad x200S as my main rig,and my M325 very well. I do want to propose on building a PC as my current hardware does not even allow me to play back a video without skipping, let alone editing.

Yeah i mean i've spent almost $3000 in 2yrs. I mean thats a lot of money but shiz is expensive

Still I don't get why he said this, yet doesn't have money for a computer. Sounds a bit spoiled, maybe your mom thinks you've spent enough and doesn't want you to waste more money or you want something plain out ridiculous and think you deserve like 2x titans in SLI lol.

Of course your mom has a point. My mom has said the same thing ever since I was 18. Computers are a money pit, although a more practical one rather than putting in a new exhaust or rims on your car. She just wants you to be smart with your money. It's taking me a long time to realize this and I'm 22 but I'm finally beginning to accept it. So, yes, she does have that right and you should listen to her.

Not trying to be harsh but instead of spending your parents money why not get a job and spend your own money.

I built my entire PC under my parents roof but I sure as hell didn't use their money to do it, I have my own job and I spend my own money to build my PC.

When you have a job your parents have no rule over what you spend your earnings on.

Then why do you ask if you can buy something when its your money?

I never ask my parents if I can buy something when I know for a fact its my money, if my parents question me I tell them straight to their face "Its my money, I don't need to alert you or make you aware when and where I am going to spend it. If I wish to purchase something new for my PC I will do so with good knowledge of the fact that it will benefit myself"

Well maybe your mom wants you to either save that money or put it into something more useful than pc hardware. It is her opinion, you can take it or leave it because it is your money.

Not saying this is the way to go about it but my parents can be the same. My response to the question "What?" would be "None of your business, I don't question and lecture you on what you purchase"

At the end of the day I just tell them and if they don't like it then they can lump it. Although in all honesty they probably just want you to put some of the money you've earned into a savings account. Basically they just want to see that you're not "wasting" it on just computer stuff. Open a savings account and put a small/decent amount of money into it every month. I myself have started to put £100 of my earnings in a savings account just because I figured it would be a good idea, also it means I still have a good fair amount of money to spend on whatever I feel the need to spend my money on. Just the other day I bought a NH-D14.

Even though I paid for it, I only got a 770 instead of a 780. And then there is the console vs PC debate. "The PS3 is made for gaming..." But even with the 770, all the games look way better, why do parents not understand that.

I know what you mean my mom is the exact same way. I think the main reason why they do it is because they really just don't understand how one gpu is different from another (for example). But I also think it might be because they dont want to see us spending all our money, ESPECIALLY on things they see as useless.

How old are you and do you manage school? My dad works like 37-38 hours a week and is not home from 8am to 5pm. There is no way you can squeeze school in there.

I plan to go into a CAREER with computers involved so i see it as i learn something new almost every other day

If you want to pursue  a Carree in PC's then she should be happy that you know what you want to do. It's the standard scenario of someone not understanding a hobby because it's not their hobby. I would just ignore her and do what you want to do.

You don't need a new PC for this. And just as a matter of interest, what did you ask for/what does it cost?

Even though I paid for it, I only got a 770 instead of a 780. And then there is the console vs PC debate. "The PS3 is made for gaming..." But even with the 770, all the games look way better, why do parents not understand that.

I know what you mean my mom is the exact same way. I think the main reason why they do it is because they really just don't understand how one gpu is different from another (for example). But I also think it might be because they dont want to see us spending all our money, ESPECIALLY on things they see as useless.

Because they don't see it as a necessity, they just see that you can play the same game with both GPUs or system's, so they are not willing to allow you to spend money on something "useless".

Main PC:

ASUS F1A55-M LX, AMD A6-3500, (2x2)gb Kingston HyperX Blu DDR3 1600mhz, Seagate Barracuda 500gb 7200rpm,
Corsair CX430M, Cooler Master Elite 343, Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit

Netbook:

Lenovo Ideapad S10-2, Intel Atom N280, (1x1)gb DDR2 667mhz, WD Scorpio Blue 250gb 5400rpm, Zorin OS 9 Lite

Maybe she wants YOU to be smart with your money. It's good to build up a money saving mentality, money is not easy to come by and some things have higher priorities than others.

I can afford to buy a GTX 780 ti because I have enough cash on hand to do so but I don't do it because its not that important. Playing games on the highest settings possible is a luxury, not a right or something that'll increase my overall knowledge in computers...
