Useless topic is useless. Spend your money on whatever you want, you're only 15, or atleast that's what your profiel says. My family is the same, if I told them I spend all my money on my PC they'll tell me it's a waste of money, but they don't know jackshit of PC's so I'll just ignore it

Depends on how old you are. To be honest, its pretty foolish to upgrade your GPU more often than every two years unless you have a sizable amount of disposable income. Especially if its to go from "high" to "very high". But being 21, and using my money, I can do whatever the hell I want with it. My 780 still runs everything nearly maxed at 2560x1440. My laptop still runs nearly everything maxed at 1920x1080. I don't need to upgrade for awhile.

I've explained to my mother how processors and video cards get faster exponentially with their transistor count doubling and the transistor nodes shrinking. She went to school for engineering so she understands most of the basics and how hardware communicates. She encourages having a computer that is better than the last and that high end should be bought if you want something to last for 3 years or so. It's pretty cool having a parent that understands technology. 

 

Software is just getting more demanding but at the same time more efficient at utilizing hardware to its full potential. I think your mother needs to understand technology and embrace its yearly growth. She's right at one thing though, you shouldn't buy something you don't need unless you really have too, especially if you can't afford it(having the money to afford is different when saving money for future costs of more important things is better in my opinion).

also it's illegal for schools to give students money, they can only give community service hours,school event tickets, but not actually paying current students money in any way just saying. Well at least that's how it works in California I believe

My dad is in his 50's but has worked with computers for his job for a good amount of years, paid as much as a car's worth when they were first needed.

Anyway, I broke his PC a couple of years ago which put him off of me working with PC's but he generally understands why I like them and knows what I am talking about what hardware concerns.

My mom doesn't know anything about them, she knows how to send an e-mail and that's about it. 

She wants me to get away from my computer more, problem is that I use it as a TV - the stuff on there is crap and thus I watch my own selected content.

I did get them to use my tablet though, at the moment they're watching the IP camera I set up as there's some thieves in the area which have messed with our stuff a couple of days ago.

Stuff like that motivates them to use the tablet, which is good.

A 780 is way too much money to be spending as a kid. Plus you've already spent 3K on your PC so far which is already way too much. I complete agree with your mother. You don't need it. I know you want to all the games at the resolution you want but sometimes life isn't fair. Sometimes you can't have everything you want and that is an important lesson that many young people are failing to learn. It feels like shit and it doesn't make sense but that's life. Be a man and get over it. Don't go bitching to others because you can't have it your own way.

By the time you're 18, the GTX 780 would be considered a low end card only worth a small fraction of it's retail price. At your age, it'd be a dumb move not to invest in something instead of blowing away money for things that become outdated in 2 years.
