Need a new UW 1440p IPS monitor

PopsicleHustler

So today my current monitor went kaput. I sat down, had a good thought and made an executive decision to purchase a high-end monitor instead of a cheap one.

My main requirements are

34" UW 1440p IPS 144Hz+

Price up to a 1000 euros. Location - EU. Amazon, Caseking are my main options.

Any good suggestions?

I went with a cheaper Gigabyte monitor and paid for it. Less than a year in it broke down. There are other issues with it like the light bleed and a few minor ones. So I would like a decent option like LG (I used LG ultrawides before and they were all great) But there are so many options, and since I haven't been following them for a while, it gets fairly confusing.

That was weird, your monitor didn't even last a year yet and it already went faulty.

Not much happening in ultrawide segment since but there's one big news about Alienware AW3423DW QD-OLED.

But if you don't want QD-OLED, LG 34GN850 / 34GP83-A is still decent today, and there's now LG 34GP950G although it's a minor upgrade compared and may need to double check on price. IMO if 34GP950G price is too close to AW3423DW I rather go with previous gen models.

That Alienware monitor is ridiculously priced compared to decent Lg monitors.

AW3423DW is 1400 euros

34GP950G is 900

34GN850B is 200 euros cheaper at 700

So, I guess it's between those two.

At 1000-euro mark there is LG 38GN950-B which is bigger and badder version of 34GP950. It looks great but resolution of 3840 x 1600 seems a little sus. Yes, it's a 21:9 and I do have the horsepower under the hood to power it. But I'm not sure how some games run on it. I'd like to play some older games from time to time, and I have 1440p UW nailed down for all of them through hours of pain and suffering. I have no idea how they would work on a higher res.

Yes, I have bad karma for non-LG monitors. I owned Samsung TV it died within 6 months. I went with LG TV, and God help me, but it has been 3 years and no issues. Same with monitors. I owned 2 LG monitors, and never had a single issue with them. When upgrading from my 29-inch 75Hz LG, I bought 34" 1080p Alienware. It arrived with a defect. Quite similar defect actually. Only then it was a vertical purple line. Sent it back and got a refund. Bought same spec LG, used for over 2 years and it works flawlessly. Sold it to a friend when bought this Gigabyte one. He still uses it, and I'm left with a piece of junk >.< So now I want a high-quality LG monitor again.

I don't have experience with older games yet (missed out for MMORPG back in the old days) my guess is 1600p support should be as good as 1440p, and instead I would be more concerned if it support ultrawide ratio or not. Every game before I play I always look at PC gaming wiki for tips including resolution.

That's so bad luck, i rarely have display issues but LG has been 50/50 for me. My first 34GN850 had couple of notable dust and managed to get it replaced. Also my old LG monitor that went to my mum suddenly had two vertical lines but I suspect it's due to age, around 8 years old.

Alot of the times I have to mess around with hex editor to make cutscenes work. This was the case even for Witcher 3. I've done some research on 3840 x 1600 resolution and it appears there are fixes for older games, but they're few and far between. Not gonna lie, getting more future proof monitor with higher resolution and higher spec  overal. So I'm at a  cross roads now. Go with old and trusted 1440p, or take a gamble, pay a little more and go with a higher end monitor.

I do not have experience with 38 inch ultrawide, maybe people who used it can share their thoughts, but briefly checking it has the same PPI as 34 inch UW. You'll get 24% more screen size with no sacrifice to PPI, and larger screen means more immersive. It would suit well for most 4k movies as the width resolution is the same as 4k monitor it wouldn't need to downscale.

I didn't go for 38 inch UW at the time because in Australia the price gap was too large, at that price point I would rather get OLED TV. Plus Dell is more generous with discounts here so it's no brainer for people to go with AW3821DW or even QD-OLED AW3423DW.

Here in the EU prices were always stupid. In Ireland this monitor costs 1600 euros, in Germany you can order it for 1000 + 30-100 euro delivery

Do you know how shit my luck is? So I RMAd that Gigabyte monitor and haven't heard from them since.

Meanwhile decided to buy that 38 inch LG monitor because specs were top notch.

Got it less than two weeks ago. Everything was good until today...

Yep, red stuck pixel on a black background in less than two weeks....

Have you tried giving a slight knock whether red pixel goes away? If no luck, I suppose you can exchange for another one...

That really sucks. Buying monitors shouldn't be that stressful but you probably one of unluckiest on the planet.

I have had an ultrawide for a few years and also used these hex edits. Most of these edits should work with 1600p aswell, you just have to use a hex translator and replace the 1440 values you're putting in with 1600. I never had a 1600p monitor so i'm not sure. But in theory it should work.

After years of using ultrawide i went back to 16:9 and it's significnalty more convenient. Your budget allows for a 42" LG C2 OLED, which will crush any IPS monitor in terms of picture quality and responsiveness. A 42" 16:9 display has no downsides compared to a 34" 21:9 as long as you can fit it on your desk. I really like the fact that i don't have to check for game support and use mods, hex-edits or third-party software anymore to fix the poor 21:9 support that even many modern games have.

Plus, any 4K monitor comes with a "native" (pixel-perfect scaling) 1080p and 720p monitor built-in for older games. You just have to use integer scaling and set the ingame resolution accordingly.

I also switched to a 42" OLED TV as my main monitor and it's simply amazing. It's worlds better than even the highest-end LCD monitor i had, which was the 2500€ Asus PG35VQ.

Little update:

My previous Gygabite monitor is still in the dark. It has been over a month now, I don't even know where it is...

Seller (caseking.de) just received my LG monitor and sent me same old bs email. Sorry, nothing we can do, sending it over for a repair/refund/whatever.

This is so bullshit. I have two monitors worth 1700 euros gone. No idea what is happening.

I thought I had some rights to get an immediate refund because LG monitor broke 2 weeks after receiving it...but no.

I feel like selling my PC and getting a PlayStation or an xbox at this point

You actually do have the right to cancel your purchase withing 2 weeks. You don't even need a reason for it.

Rückgabe von Artikeln gemäß Fernabsatzrecht (Widerruf innerhalb von 14 Tagen) – Caseking

If they don't acknowledge it, the next step would be to set a fixed time window.

As a last resort you can also try to write an email to Der8auer. Maybe he can try to clear things up seeing as he works there.

It doesn't apply here. Monitor broke just over two week of purchase (September 14), not two weeks after receiving it (September 20th).

I think two week period starts after you place an order, not after you physically receive the product.

No it starts when you receive it.

So I sent them a little heated email demanding a refund because what the hell..

Got two same emails with two different PDFs.

I'm confused, they're sending back a refund?

Sorry for bothering you with it, but you sound like someone who knows more than me regarding this stuff.

But from what it looks like they refunded the monitor shipping costs.

If someone did not use reason to reach their conclusion in the first place, you cannot use reason to convince them otherwise.

You probably shouldn't share invoices including your full name an adress online. Delete these attachments asap. Or at least keep stuff like that in DM's (still not wise though, who knows i could share them)

It's someonething I'm not that worried about. But those two invoices for 1000 and 50, those are refunds for monitor and its shipping costs?

Yes. They're refunds.

Ok, so all it took wad a little agry email saying I was fed up with waiting.

Now I guess I have to send a second email regarding my older monitor. Since EU laws specify that repair had to be done within "reasonable" amount of time, I can demand action because a month doesn't fit that description.

Thank you for your help

So last update

After almost 6 weeks, they're refunding my old Gigabyte monitor after it was deemed "unrepairable"

My LG monitor has been refunded in full (including shipping costs)

So I'm on a quest for something else now. Thinking Dell Alienware because from what I've read online, they have excellent customer service and monitor warranty
