Users can mark their own posts as best answer?

What happened? Users can mark their own posts as best answers.

What did you expect to happen? Users not being able to mark their own posts as best answers.

If it's a cloudflare error, what was the ray ID from the bottom of the error page? No

 

 

So, I'm not sure if this is a bug or perhaps just an oversight, but why does are users allowed to mark their own posts as best answers?

We're not allowed to emote our own posts because it can change the "prestige" level (or whatever you call it); I'd argue it's even worse to be able to inflate your own best answers.

it's always been that way afaik. it's been brought up a few times in "forum suggestions" , here is one of them, with some reasons why they don't change it:

Yeah this has been brought up a few times. Apparently if you solve your own problem and don't abuse it it's fine to do so

I don't think we would change it even if that was a option. There are, as noted in previous threads, reasons to keep it as option. And it hasn't been brought up within moderation as major concern in the realm of post and reputation farming.

 

If you see someone misusing the function, report.

I'd argue it's important to keep for cleanliness of the forum. Marking a solution is a good way to prevent posts from growing longer than needed when people don't read to the end to see if someone got an answer already and just start answering based on the question. 
I've used the feature myself because an issue resolved itself. 

I haven't seen people using this for reputation farming, and if I did, reporting it would be the solution, not removing the feature in my opinion. The only concern I'd have is making sure people looking at a post are aware and don't believe something just because it's marked as best answer. That seems to be a non issue as the answer is marked as coming from the author, so anyone looking for a solution to a similar problem will have a reasonable amount of skepticism for an answer seeing it's from the author

I'm sure it's intentional, it's for those who have a question, find the solution themselves, and include the answer in the replies so those with the same issue can fix it.
