RTX 3060 has 12 GB of memory - 3070 has 8 GB...?

VRAM isn't the only decider for GPU performance. Nvidia adds VRAM as they see fit. 

 

Unfortunately limiting the 3070 to 8GB seems to have been a bad move on their part.

-3060 good for rendering and work where you need more vram

- 3070 better for gaming 

 

if Nvidia had brains : 

 

3070 with 10 Gb very good for gaming 

3080 with 12 Gb very very good for gaming

Ehh, 8GB is fine.   Don't go by the "usage" numbers on Task Manager or other programs.  Actual usage is much lower then the reported "reserved" amount.

Probably fine. If you're worried use DLSS, it's less memory intensive (slight latency hit)

More is only better if you really need it. The short version is 8GB was considered ok, 6GB was not. Due to the memory width the only option was to double from there, to 12GB.

It's not "fine" in some games.

For example the 3060 can run Forza Horizon 5 at 1440p or 4k on Extreme but a 3060ti, 3070 and 3070ti have artifacts after prolonged play since they run out of VRAM.

 

A 3060 can play DOOM Eternal at 4k with RT but 3060ti, 3070, 3070ti cant because they don't have enough VRAM.

 

Which is stupid as heck.

Extreme settings?   What fps are you getting with those cards on Extreme?

 

Standard use is just fine.  Playing on Extreme or Ultra is a waste and those cards struggle at 4k then.

 

I don't see it being a reasonable use case for that level of card.

3060ti gets around 80FPS at 1440p on Extreme in Forza Horizon. But it's heavily artifacting after a while because of low VRAM.

That's what I got on my 3060ti when it runs out of VRAM in Forza... rainbow roads and messed up textures.

 

Game is perfectly playable on Extreme in terms of FPS. Nothing wrong with playing it on those settings... it's just that 3060ti, 3070 and 3070ti cant do it because of VRAM unless you like rainbow roads and messed up textures.

A RTX 3060 does not have this issue.

 

Yes, setting things to High is fine and there is barely any difference in visual fidelity but come on man... a 2nd lowest tier card can do it and cards 1 to 3 tier above it cant? It's just stupid.

Yeah its fine

This whole Ampere line is Absolute trash

Expensive and makes zero sense

Best card is the 3060Ti (for the right price)

All of the other cards are straight ass

I thought about upgrading my 2080 when Ampere first launched

but after seeing the specs and price, that's a hard pass

I was thinking why should I upgrade am 8Gb card to an 8GB card - makes no sense

Just go for used cards like the 2080Ti or 1080Ti depends on your needs

They have a better bang for the buck value, and they are cheaper
