I'm shocked how well this worked - Hot Rodded Steam Deck

AlexTheGreatish

I love the Steam Deck, but unfortunately it can be a bit loud and runs kinda hot.. well today we change that.

The thermal expansion part where the cooler didn't fit in weren't going to be helped by cooling the plate down. If anything, cooling the plate makes the gap shrink and in turn the fit gets even tighter.

However, having the option to screw on a portable heat sink would be nice, even a metal to metal interface can conduct a fair bit of heat if one don't want the hassle of thermal compounds or pads.

Also, instead of using nuts to hold the block in place, why not just use screws? Though, from a prototyping standpoint, a threaded rod and not is a lot simpler.

The next toy for Alex's workshop should be a 3D scanner.

Alex, you know I love you mate, but I cringe when you use imperial units.

Have to admit, the extra tight fit was soooooooo satisfying to watch.

If it wasn't for the "thermal" (burning fingers) concern, just adding the hunk of metal to a deck would be pretty cool.

What is this "give away winner" on the Youtube chat?  Seems like a scam to me.

I'm a little confused, where are the 5°C temperature and the 2000 RPM decrease mentioned in the video?

They are scams that riddle pretty much every video from major channels nowadays. Ignore them, or even better use the Report feature on Youtube.

I want to build this myself and the 3d data of the aluminium part would make it much easier. Is it possible to get them?

I didn't bother watching it again or taking a screenshot, but when watching in real-time I thought the same thing. Maybe it was just an editing error?

What was the size of the threaded bar you used to screw it down ?

Also how did you deal with the fact that the heatsink lift up away from the board at the fan end

Didn't worry about it, seems to be fine.

@AlexTheGreatish Kudos on the CAD! CNC'd/1 day shipped for $75 from Xometry and fits like a glove on OJ (Because, it should have). Hey, quick question for you or anyone else who knows... What is the size and pitch for the stand-off stud rods that you use to screw the adapting plate to the OG heat plate? Planning to just buy some rods and chop the suckers down and belt sand the "Alex heat plate" if needed.
