I'm going to be honest. From the perspective of digital marketing and online content creator it's very cool to see. From the perspective of a LTT subscriber from the NCIX days it's sad. Why has Linus become so fixated on money and generating revenue? The quality of content, not quality of the content, has nose dived from tech enthusiast to tech pissing contest. It's cool to see one off projects that push the extremes but not for the sole fact to cost a lot of money to drive traffic.  While the videos quality and entertainment value have increased the content has become diluted for nothing more than profit. The reason I have no idea what a 29:13 minute video named "I finally made it" with a clickbait thumbnail or someone who is blind using dictation software like Jaws or Siri is because of money. That's not to say all of the videos are like this but it's become the dominant majority now and seeing videos like this sorta show the direction Linus wants to continue in.

Technically this list is ranked by highest revenue, not profit. If we substract production costs and factor in sponsorship, among the videos on this list my guess would be "Faster Internet for free in 30 secs" making the highest profit followed by "wish.com build".

Regarding Linus's comment at the end, I'm not surprised that a video with the title  "I've waited so long for this..." did relatively bad.  The title and thumbnail gives the viewer practically zero idea on what the video is even about.  Why should anyone click on it who isn't a major fan of the channel already?

Many people don't care if there's ads.  Some people will make a point of not blocking a channel's ads because they want to support the channel.

Not everyone that watches the videos know everything, some people are learning or just need an answer to a problem.

Others are willing to view ads to support content creators they like.

If you mean for LMG people Linus has a policy set up where people are not supposed to use an adblocker and he called out Luke for not disabling it while doing the WAN Show.

Because the literal title of "Building a small-form-factor PC" is definitely not going to generate a lot of views. The title is there to entice people into clicking and seeing what's the video about. If the title already somewhat described the video then people are just going to assume they know what's in it and not watch it. It's human psychology.

 

People are curious and will watch what they dont know, not what they already know.

I disagree. People typically go to movies because of prior knowledge about it. Either from the title, actors, posters, or trailer. If an Avengers movie came out and it was called A lot of Action and Death and the trailer was a 20 second clip of crabs walking on a beach, it would severely impact the number of people who will go see the movie. 

 

Now Youtube is a little different as there is no investment if you watch a video you don't like. Its free and you can instantly find another. This is where Linus needs to be careful. His audience is not retentive and is building a platform off of fluff. If LTT couldn't use clickbait anymore would they go bankrupt? I believe they are blindly walking a fine line of this and diversifying the content is the saving grace for now.

Some people don't want to block ads so that youtubers can get revenue.

 

BUT also, I found that youtube ties it's subscriber functions, like watch history, into the same machines that serve ads...so if you were to say use Pi-Hole to block those sites, it messes with your account if you mainly use something like an Apple TV to watch youtube.....for example.

 For @James specifcally, something curious is that a number of the streams that showed up.  The "I love building computers" and the one that was at #10 with Anthony running the controls..those are often fed to me automatically by autoplay after I've let it go thru a few more recent videos. Youtube likes serving them up for whatever reason.
