Personally, the person who spends thousands of dollars on a PC is either a graphics junkie, has something to prove, or has too much money. Someone who just plays Nintendo games is still a gamer, they just don't need state-of-the-art tech.

Person for whom playing videogames is a relatively important portion of their free time. It doesn't matter how much you spend on the platform, it counts so long as it's a "game".

 

I'd argue that in order to be a "game", the thing needs to be at least somewhat interactive and dynamic. As such, "cow clickers" and games like Candy Crush don't make a person a gamer, they make a person put some smudges on a phone by exploiting their addictive personality.

I'd argue the guy who spends a couple hours a day on his iPad playing whatever games is still a gamer. He is still enjoying whatever it is. 

 

The only people who try to apply these kinds of labels are...well...a tad stuck up and elitist and need to feel good about justifying their purchases.

much to allot of peoples (and for a while my own) annoyance id say anyone is a gamer no matter the platform...
thats why i dislike the gamer ideology.
"im a gamer, you're not a gamer you just play nintendogs on your ds" and so on....
who cares that you're a gamer, that used to mean you were into tech and actually meant something back in the day, nowadays any 5 year old or grandma with flappy birds on thier phone is a "gamer", the culture has been polluted and prostituted by its own popularity.

i class myself as a hardware enthusiast, doesnt matter if we're talkign gpu's, cpu's, ssd's, powersupplys... i find them all interesting and leave the "cod sucks, bf4 is much better" to the gamers, they're just as bad as the console gamers arguing over which is better while both missing the point that there is no "win" scenario to thier arguement.

That's an interesting question. I've played hundreds of games and games used to be my main interest but I never really considered myself a gamer because I didn't have the same mindset as the people I saw as being core gamers. 

 

I'm interested in video games as a medium but although I spend all of my money on them (retro-gaming, contemporary gaming etc.) generally speaking I'm almost always disappointed with them. There really are very few I've actually really enjoyed but when I find one I like it makes it all worth while.

Someone who plays games a lot and playing them can be considered as at least his/her hobby. Keyword: Games...GameS...as in plural. I dont care if you put thousands of hours in for example League of Legends to me you're not a gamer if you dont play anything else that can be considered a game other than LoL(example)
