TV recommendations for Games/Movies

Grey Eminence

Hi all,

just moved in my new flat and I need to buy TV. Last time I bought TV was in 2011 some 32'' Panasonic Viera and I played Tekken 5/TTTG2 and all was good.

Now I would like to buy something bigger. 32-55'' maximum. Not sure what to look for etc (ips, va panel, oled, qled etc). I play occasionally for fun (PS3 - Tekken tag tournament 2 only), and watching movies with my GF as well. I am doing this on my 27'' display from my PC for time being, and all seems to be fine, just movies and contrast/brightness is not best.

I would like to have Smart TV with Netflix, being able to record to USB, read from USB, AirPlay, wifi, possible bluetooth too. Similar that samsung I've been suggested.

Distance from couch is like 2m if that helps. Also, maybe 4K resolution as I plan to buy PS5 too.

So far I've been suggested Samsung QE55Q80T, which is VA panel, but also newer one Samsung QE55Q80A, which is IPS. IF there is anything better or cheaper etc, that would be great.

If you could suggest anything for up to 680£ or 1000-1090cad $, that would be amazing. Thank you.

The Q80T is the better choice there IMO. It looks like it's pretty similar to the QN90A I just bought for movies/PC games, except the contrast ratio and brightness aren't as good. The QN90A has been great aside from some frustration with the menus. So, the Q80T should also be a good option for games/movies. Here are the rtings reviews for the three and comparisons.

Thanks. I was given also this, as 'best' but with a bit over the budget.

What do you think about

LG OLED55C12 (2021) ?

That one is better than all of the above. If you can scrape together the extra cash it'll be worth it.

If someone did not use reason to reach their conclusion in the first place, you cannot use reason to convince them otherwise.

Thanks, I thought that. Also, I measured my wall etc and 55'' is big. Is this type TV/with same features in 40'' or 45''?

There is a 42" and 48" version available, but TV's are measured diagonally. You almost certainly have enough space on that wall.

It is not about the wall to have space, but the size of the room. No need to have TV like in cinema and be close to it. Makes no sense. Any model numbers for those sizes?

The recommended ratio of size:distance is generally accepted as between 1:1 and 1:2.  Meaning that at 72", that's anything between 36" and 72" displays.  No way in hell are you oversized with a 42" or even 48" display.

for the smaller ones, back to the c1.

The 42inch model is 2022, costs a lot more than clearanced models and isn't very available.  It just dropped on a few US websites 2 days ago.  The only reason to get it is if your using it as a monitor though a lot of people just use 48in.

Not bad, but 55'' is too big for my taste and my room. 50'' looks better but not sure. Got recommended this one https://www.alza.cz/50-samsung-qe50qn90a-d6366905.htm?kampan=adwtv_televize_bee_pro_televize_televize-50-samsung-qe50qn90a-wr178m8&ppcbee-adtext-variant=inz_rsa_bee_pro-live2-pn I need to check my wall for this one. If they do 45-48 inches, then you can post. Thanks

LCD give you better full screen brightness and better big bright highlight (sun, bomb, headlight etc.) OLED give better small bright highlight (stars, city light) and better detail in shadows but some at cost of overall full screen brightness. It also give far suprior response time compared to LCD, and espeically VA but if you aren't sensitive to motion artefacts that may not be an issue.

The best way is to try it out for yourself and figure which one works better for you. I have a friend who went from LCD to OLED only to be disappointed and end up buying another LCD to replace it in just over a year because of its disappointing highlight,

I would personally recommend against Q80T though. I've tried that TV out and it's absolutely terrible, one of the worst I had seen in a long time. I would suggest taking a look at last year Q90A or LG C1, or maybe even CX. I had seen some 55 inch drop down to just less than 700 buck and could be a far better deal than getting a midrange this year.

Just get any OLED TV. OLED is the best for movies experience especially HDR content. I personally won't go for Samsung QLED as it price is too closed to OLED and never perform better than OLED in normal lighting condition environment. If your environment is freaking bright and OLED cannot fulfill it, then go for QD-OLED latest tech TV by Samsung or Sony.

I notice you mentioned Smart TV with Netflix, being able to record to USB. If you mean record Netflix show to USB to watch later, then this is not possible. No TV or TV Box allow this due to protection of the streaming services.

Actually, QD-OLED is even worse in bright environments. Both current gen high-end WOLED's and QD-OLED's go to around 1000 nits, but the QD options have significantly worse coatings, raising the black level with ambient light present. That essentially kills the biggest argument going for OLED.

If one really needs a bright display, Samsung's QN90A or QN90B are great choices, getting to almost 2000 nits peak. But there are also plenty of reasons not to go for Samsung like all their firmware shennanigans and lack of quality control.

For everything else, OLED is the way to go. You might be able to score a good deal on last-gen models like the CX or C1, which are only slightly worse than the current-gen C2.

If someone did not use reason to reach their conclusion in the first place, you cannot use reason to convince them otherwise.

I though Samsung advertising QD-OLED is much bright. I never check QD-OLED yet as my current LG C9 still working fine and it is very bright enough to me. 😅

I though Samsung advertising QD-OLED is much bright. I never check QD-OLED yet as my current LG C9 still working fine and it is very bright enough to me. 😅

Advertise? Yes. In real world viewing it's slightly dimmer, not to mention much more inaccurate than LG's comparable option:

Don't mind the higher 2% Peak from the S95B QD-OLED, the "real scene highlight" and good EOTF tracking is what you should look for.

If someone did not use reason to reach their conclusion in the first place, you cannot use reason to convince them otherwise.
