A Google Store Bug Tells Anyone Who Has Any Google Store Credit That They Have $500 Store Credit

Summary

The Google Store's redesigned account menu has a bug which shows anyone who has any Google Store credit at all that they have $500. However, your normal balance shows up at checkout.

Google Store 500 credit bug

Folks at 9to5Google managed to replicate the bug with three different accounts. Each time, the $500 credit disappeared on the final checkout step.

The Google Store just got a redesigned account menu. When you tap on your profile avatar in the top right corner of the page, you’ll see a neatly designed menu with new icons. However, you might be surprised to see you have $500 worth of Google Store credits waiting to be spent. The message appears right under your profile picture in the account menu.

My thoughts

Seems like someone working at Google must have made a mistake when coding this redesign. Hopefully, Google fixes this soon and not too many people are tricked by this bug but I am pretty sure most people would notice at checkout that they don't have that Google Store credit before buying something. However, this is just another case of where one small mistake can have a more widespread impact.

I bet Google's reaction to this will be to kill the entire store and pretend it never happened.

Sounds suspiciously like GM.
