Broken USB, how to copy files?

porina
Go to solution Solved by Helpful Tech Witch,

You cant save them to google drive?
You should just be able to install the google drive app and manually upload the files to a new folder.....

I have an old Android tablet with some images on it I want to move off the device at original quality.

My preferred method is to connect a USB cable and do it that way. The problem is, it seems faulty. I've tried multiple cables on multiple computers, with multiple USB ports. I get an error in device manager about failing to get some USB data or other. It is not due to the USB transfer mode on the device as I've tried a few options, all with the same error.

Why not use Google Photos? Because I'm not aware of a way to select from another system only the photos that were uploaded by this specific device. Images were created over a long time, so it is impractical to go over the timeline to pick them out manually with the stuff mixed in from other devices. I don't seem to be able to save it separately to Google Drive because backups to there seem to be handled by Photos.

I think I might have gave myself a way out there! What if I download and use another could backup provider? I'll look into that, but would welcome any other potential solutions if any.

Do you have a NAS, or an accessible share on your pc will do... then use a file manager like fx/fe file explorer to copy to that share,

Does it have an sd card slot? If so and you have an sd card and another device, you could copy them to the sd card, put it in the other device, and copy them that way.

Takes less than 5 minutes to install Filezilla FTP server Download FileZilla Server for Windows (64bit x86) on your computer and create a user account with rights to write files and folders inside a folder on your computer.

Then you can connect to the ftp server from your tablet and upload the files to your computer.

I use andFTP on my phone for this and works perfectly fine:  AndFTP (your FTP client) - Apps on Google Play

I don't know what I did last time, but now I tried going through the Drive app and it does seem to let me upload the files that way. Previously however I tried it, it seemed to push be to the Photos app.

It is a bit annoying Drive doesn't have a "select all" button and I have to choose files on each date manually, but it isn't spread over too many so doable. Edit: doing a 2nd folder, the interface was different than the 1st time I did it, and there is a "select all" option hidden in the menu. Argh!

I'll keep that in mind for reserve. I never considered doing that before and is good to know.

I'd have to look it up if I want to try it, but thanks for the suggestion.
