What on your current build or upcoming build are you considering as...wait for it......"future proof."

minimalist

My audio stuff should last like 10 years but I have a habit of selling and buying new stuff every few months. I'm going to try to keep my current setup for a while though since I would have to invest a lot to get like the last 3% or so out of my music.

Either my headset- Logitech G35,

Or my RAM- 16GB G.Skill Ripjaws X Series

Everything else was pretty much outdated last year

I'm that guy with the GPD Win.

My hard drive has already lasted me around 10yrs so I don't expect too much more lifetime out of it. My SSD is 3/4 years old and hopefully will be fine for more years.

My case in theory will be fine because its old and from the time when they were full metal construction however there is no cooling options so I'll definitely be replacing it.

However, as I will be going to college this fall, I don't think I will be building a new PC for a while :( .

I understand, it's just that I'm so used to see that MB with a GPU...  :P

I would say keyboard, mouse, case, speakers.

my case was built in 2003, have the sticker to prove it! Its ironic. i love it. people assume gaming=high performance. old=/= high performance. well. people assume my computers a gaming computer just because it has a clear side and glows.

10 year old bling still works yo

I guess a good psu is future proof. Everything is using less and less energy, so I think there will be no need to upgrade if you have a good psu. My Logitech mouse is over 6 years old. It works, it is sturdy and I don't really feel to get a new one.

There are only a couple things that will stay in my system...

1) RCA Stereo - I believe I got this around 2000/2001 and she's still kicking strong. Got many, many more years left in her!

2) Case - It's gonna get modified when I put my custom loop in it, but I like it and will keep using it.

3) SSD's/HDD's - So long as they don't fail they will all keep getting used. I don't need any more storage (1x 240GB SSD, 1x 250GB SSD, 1x 500GB HDD, 1x 1TB External HDD, 1x 3TB HDD).

4) DVD Dive - with how strong digital media is getting, I'll really only need it for my past stuff.

5) LG 21.5" LED LCD 1080p monitor - Again, something I'll just keep using until it fails.

6) Keyboard/Mouse/Mousepad - these will stay until worn out. I really like my SteelSeries stuff.

My CPU/Mobo/RAM will remain for another couple years then be swapped, my GPU's are going once the 880 is released, my PSU will get swapped either when I see an EVGA 1000w P2 on sale or I add a second 880. Air coolers/fans will be swapped when I put in a custom loop. Yeah.

Never say it's not broken. Everything is broken. Why? Because everything needs MOAR POWA!

Nothing in my current rig other than mouse and keyboard, but next rig I'll say case (custom desk), PSU (evga 850g2) CPU cooler (scyth ninja 3)

That's it

considering its only built for browsing the web/downloading, I'd say my whole rig will be good for years to come yet.

Nice case hehe...  ^_^ (I have the same one...) oh and nice overall rig ;D

I see people righting cpu a lot. If it would stay exactly in the same condition as it is today, a cpu would be future proof. But the transistors inside a cpu wear out, and will grow weak in 5 years. On my build speakers, mouse& keyboard, monitor(for at least another 10 years), SSD(this should also last 10 years).

cpu, 8 cores baby!

You really think your SSD/HDDs will last 10 years? 14 years ago, a high end computer (for several thousands of dollars) had a 20GB HDD.

In 10 years we will probably have SSDs which are an order of magnitude faster than what we got right now (several GB/s) and probably several TB in size. It would be painful to use your current SSD/HDD by that time.

I've said that I will buy a new SSD once I can get about 1TB for 2000 SEK (think 200 dollars, so a price/GB ratio of 0.2). Right now the Samsung 840 EVO 1TB is slight above double that. I wouldn't be surprised if it dropped 50% in price within 5 years though.

My first SSD cost 1100 SEK for a 60GB 3 years ago.

My second SSD cost 1079 SEK for 128GB ~1.5 years ago.

Today I could get a 250GB SSD for 1200 SEK.

In 1.5 years I will probably be able to get a 500GB SSD for <1500 SEK.

In 3 years I might be able to get a 1TB SSD for under 2000 SEK.

So my SSD is not future proof, and once I can get SSDs that big for that cheap I will probably replace my mechanical hard drive with it, making my HDD not future proof either. My 2TB will probably last 5 years though, but it depends on how much improvements we get in HDD capacity over the next 10 years. Seems like it has dropped off quite a lot.

My keyboard might last 10 more years but do I really want to use it at that point? It will be really worn out and probably really disgusting. My mouse will surely break within 10 years. I probably go through one mouse per 3-4 years on average.

My headphones might be able to last 10 years but if they do then just barely (and they will be extremely worn out).

My case would probably last 10 years but I am already sick of it. My PSU might last 10 years but then again, looking back at how bad PSUs were 10 years ago I really doubt that I would want to keep it for so long.

CPU, GPU, RAM and Mobo are obviously no go.

My monitors will probably still work but be outdated as hell in 10 years. I am already tempted to replace one of them with a 2560x1440 Dell IPS monitor.

I guess my AMP and my DAC are fairly future proof. My speakers are already more than 10 years old and they do the job well enough so maybe they will last 10 more years as well.

10 years is a veeeeery long time in terms of computer hardware.

Future proof...your playing with fire here bud. But mine would be:

Monitor (once I get my new one)

Case

Keyboard

Mouse

Beneath this mask there is more than flesh. Beneath this mask there is an idea, Mr. Creedy, and ideas are bulletproof.

As I get older I get angrier more cynical, meaner. I feel some warning posts coming. I feel a ban coming. I was warned.

Only my PSU and radiators really :( I would possibly say my GPU but I really don't know how well the 780 is going to be able to handle 1440p by next year or so- it's struggling a little at the moment.

Future proof?

Blu-Ray drive

Mouse,  Keyboard

Case

Mouse pad

HDMI cables

Wall mounts

LED lighting.

In other words, random shit that doesn't amount to much anyways. Nothing else is future proof or even close to it.

Even some of the stuff on your list might not be "future proof" for 10 years.

Your mouse pad will probably be disgusting after having absorbed 10 years worth of sweat, dead skin and other dirt. Your mouse and keyboard will probably not last 10 years (maybe a good mechanical keyboard can, but probably not the mouse).

If they make HDMI better (which I sure hope they do) in 10 years then you might have to get a new cable to support the latest standard. I am not sure if current cables will be compatible with for example 4K for example.

Stop killing my hopes and dreams :(

Of all the things I actually listed, I only like my mouse pad and would stockpile on the suckers if I was really crazy. Steelseries knows how to do them.

I think some/all of my HDMI cables are already outdated. We're already bearing down on 2.0, mine are literally from the product bags of demo crap that Best Buy employees would use for those fancy demos they have at the entrance to the home theater department.
