OP is intelligent enough to not buy the reference cooler. Nobody is recommending that.

That's not what you said, you said the difference between a 770 and a 290 is 2% tops

so you've owned these cards but you're still confused about the naming scheme, I rest my case

1-whow do you know

2-i said i own a 290 only , ,and i only bought it because i had the money to but now i regret it ,big time

Qualified to change a GPU cooler?

I guess you have a stock CPU heatsink then o.0

well , i had friends telling me to chang my 290 cooler because i'm having temps problems ,but to be Honest ,i don't have the balls to ,installing a water block on a graphics card is very tricky and have to be done by a Pro ,to dodge any damage that can be done to the GPU

That is perfectly fine, qualification is something totally different though ;)

You could look into getting a Prolimatech MK-26. Edited for correct brand, got mixed up.

Damn Nice job Dude ,an other member in your litle 290 Gang , i just Hope he gets a 290 ,then after a wile ,he comes back in hear asking for help about the silly temps it runs at and the fact that his ear drums blow up when he ramped up the fan RPM ,and you'll tell him to sell it and get a real Graphics card , fouling them around with your Love to 290s ,whats wrong with you

I actually switched from a 770 to a 290x and everything was massively faster (15-25fps on average every game )

CPU AMD FX 8350 @5GHz. Motherboard Asus Crosshair V Formula Z. RAM 8GB G.Skill Sniper. GPU Reference Sapphire Radeon R9 290X. Case Fractal Design Define XL R2. Storage Seagate Barracuda 1TB HDD and 120GB Kingston HyperX 3K. PSU XFX 850BEFX Pro 850W 80+ Gold. Cooler XSPC RayStorm

For an actual monitor I have an hp and it's 1600x900 and for most games I was pushing 70 fps with the 770 and am now pushing over 90 with the 290x, of course with some exclusions like crysis. Also those are numbers from my tv, since it is 1080p. Fps are higher on monitor but they scaled exactly in percentages

70 and 90 were the averages

God does no one here have any clue about the difference between heat and temperature?

The reference r9 290 has a shit cooler that isn't sufficient to dissipate the heat fast enough (ie, power), hence it gets hot. You slap a decent aftermarket cooler on that card and the heat will be transferred away quickly. Everyone complaining about how hot the card gets is willfully pretending that only the reference models exist and are giving dreadful advice to someone who asked for help as a result.

Get a 290 with a non-reference cooler. It'll be better than a 4GB 770.

I really hope that @LinusTech bans LawrenceBarnes. He is posting complete bullshit everywhere. I remember that he was saying that his 660Ti Boost performed better than the 290, and now he's trying to say that the 770 is better than the 290. Both are false, he knows it and just says it to promote his little dream world of "Nvidia is waaay better". I'm sick and tired of this member and I think some form of disciplinary action should be performed against this member, because in the end, he is sharing false information to people obviously new to building computers.

i don't think reminding members planning to go R9-290 about it's great performance yes ,but it's very High temps ,loudness ,and Power consumption ,and recommending one with an after market cooler or and nVidia alternative is even wrong and leads to reporting ,i give my opinion just like you guys ,you don't like it don't read it .

I don't get this level of fanboyism. I mean christ's sake I have an nvidia system, but the 290 is just an objectively better purchase for the price point.

don't get fouled by what they're saying ,what i said was the 660Ti PE is great at 24" ,1080P gaming and recommended spending the spare on a better CPU perhaps ,it would be better ,non of what they're saying ,

It doesn't make a difference what size the monitor is; 24", 30", 100" 1080p all have the same number of pixels. I game at 1080p with two GTX 580s, one of them would perform about the same as a 660 Ti. I would not really consider one of them enough for 1080p gaming on ultra these days. Two are pretty decent if you're not too bothered about noise or heat. (Noise wouldn't be an issue if watercooling, anyway, though your room would still get pretty toasty in summer.)

I don't know what their budget was or what CPU they were already going for, so meh. Whatever. Unless it were actually bottlenecking I'd care more about the strength of the GPU over CPU though.

i think it does ,because i used a dell 23" and saw some performance drop when i switched my 39" LED TV ,or is it just me ????

Still he is wright about the temps dude ,my 290 is worrying me in terms of its thermal

If you have the reference R9 290, then yes, it'd run hot. I'd stated before that AMD slapped on a cooler that was not up to the task of cooling the beast. With 3rd party cooling, temps would perhaps be higher than their nVidia counterparts, but nowhere in the region of 95C. With good 3rd party cooling like those on the Sapphire Tri-X, Asus DCU II, PowerColor PCS+/TurboDuo, etc, you should be seeing about 70C to 75C under load. Of course, airflow must be pretty decent in your case for optimum cooling. BTW, not being a grammar nazi, but it is spelled as 'right', not 'wright'. Sorry, that was bothering me a little....
