You're on the wrong forum with a question like that.

I guess i'll humor you though I think this thread is bait.

What exactly are you trying to improve over your $2000USD pair of headphones?

This is not the way. You need to tell us the rest of your audio gear. The AMP, DAC and everything else. Includes custom cables, pads, mods, ...

Upgrading by downgrading the budget isn’t happening when you’re already into 4 digits on audio hardware.

1500$ isn’t going to get you anything definitively better than the 820’s, there are alternatives that have their own upsides and downsides, but nothing noticeably better

Agreed.  From the 800 series, the next notable performance leap has a 5-figure price-tag.  Not worth it, unless here to humble-brag.

What about them? Do you have opinions of your own on your $2000 headphones? What you like and don't like and are looking to change?

There is no such thing as "upgrading" in the price range you mentioned.

Not sure if this topic is serious or bragging but the people who spend those prices, have been on a path for a long time to get to know their preferences in audio, design, comfort and so on. From what I've gathered, the HD820 is an overpriced headphone but I can't tell anything myself because I'm not planning to spend that amount of cash. But like I said, the only one person who can tell wether it's an upgrade or not, that person is you. Audio is meant to enjoy, not "upgrading".

DAC/AMPs:

Klipsch Heritage Headphone Amplifier

Headphones: Klipsch Heritage HP-3 Walnut, Meze 109 Pro, Beyerdynamic Amiron Home, Amiron Wireless Copper, Tygr 300R, DT880 600ohm Manufaktur, T90, Fidelio X2HR

CPU: Intel 4770, GPU: Asus RTX3080 TUF Gaming OC, Mobo: MSI Z87-G45, RAM: DDR3 16GB G.Skill, PC Case: Fractal Design R4 Black non-iglass, Monitor: BenQ GW2280

Personally I would say yes.
Having tried the HD820 I (and many others) feel that it does not deliver on quality for the price at all due to the uh....well unfortunately extremely wonky frequency response

Sennheiser HD820 – In-Ear Fidelity

Something like the HD800S for comparison:

Sennheiser HD800S – In-Ear Fidelity

If I were you, I personally would recommend selling and swapping to something like a Hifiman Arya if possible.

Or if you're happy to dunk more money into it, something higher maybe (though your DAC/Amp will be a bigger factor then)

Most used headphones: Hifiman Susvara, Abyss 1266 Phi TC, Sennheiser HD800-S

hd820 is a horrible headphone. Sell them to whatever fool will take them and start researching your next set properly.
