Can I Put 88Gb Of Ram In My Setup?

Go to solution Solved by Windows7ge,

My experience with mixing server memory has been very touch & go. I mean that as in sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn't and for a given server you really won't know unless you try it.

I have had sever memory purchased at two separate times but with perfectly identical specs/manufacturers/stickers. And would have failure to POST. Has to send ALL of it to the manufacturer in exchange for a verified matched kit for all of it to work.

Other times I've had very mixed kits work fine.

I can't vouch for your exact server, motherboard, BIOS version so it's a gamble you can take. You can increase your chances of it working though by matching the specs to the old memory as best you can. Although I have heard different before generally servers don't like mixing RAM of different ranks. Say 1Rx4 w/ 2Rx8 or 4Rx16. So keep that in mind.

Otherwise if you don't mind the risk you can go for it. There is a chance it will work.

If you're particularly worried about it you could also ask yourself the question. Do you really need it? 64GB in a workstation is substantial. Does your workflow really need more?

I'm going to put more ram in the my Dell Precision T7610 Server/Workstation I already have 64GB of SK Hynix 8GB 1Rx4 DDR3-1866 PC3-14900R REG ECC 240p RDIMM HMT41GR7AFR4C-RD and I found a 24 GB kit online of the same exact memory. Can I mix the 2 together and get 88Gb of ram or do I have to get enough for 128 GB of ram. My motherboard has 16 memory slots and I checked the ram compatibility with my motherboard FYI.

It'll work most likely, but you probably won't get dual/quad channel speeds.

It would probably work but there are no promises when mixing memory kits.

Yes, but you first need to set your DRAM voltage to 1.21 gigawatts

i've had a lot of luck with mixing rdimms, but i've defenately also had a server refusing to boot with certain sticks mixed.

i presume, since you say "exact same sticks", you mean it's a kit of 3 sticks? that just seems a really weird configuration, and you're probably giving up any chance of dual/quad channel memory. i'd say if you dont sorely need the extra memory, it's most likely just a waste of money that will just actually make things worse.

24GB - that's probably a triple channel kit of 3x8GB. That only applies to LGA1356 & LGA1366 in terms of buying the right number of modules for the number of memory channels available on the platform.

Your computer has 16 DIMM slots according to the Dell spec sheet. There should be no reason that you can't use the memory you've found as the computer supports at least 256GB RAM.

That said, if you have 64GB installed and all are of the same type, that suggests that you have 8x8GB DIMMs installed and want to add another 3. I'd add at least 4 for 96GB as at least the extra memory would be in dual channel. Buying 24GB will more than likely leave you with (at best) 64GB in quad channel, 32GB in dual channel and 8GB in single channel. Not a configuration I'd want to run and I wouldn't be surprised if the computer doesn't boot (but it could work without issue).

Those modules seem cheap enough though. A quick search for HMT41GR7AFR4C-RD came up with this seller that wants $24 per stick of RAM. I've never heard of the company so have no idea if they're worth considering. But I wouldn't buy 3 sticks of memory when I assume you have 8 installed. Buy 4 or another 8.
