Razer reneges on its claim the Zephyr mask uses 'N95-grade' filters

ImperialKnightErrant

Summary

Razer has quietly pulled mentions of "N95 grade" protection from the web page for its Zephyr face mask following online criticism.

As recently as January 5, per the Wayback Machine, Razer's website read that mask used "N95 grade filters with two-way protection." That language is no longer on the site. The current page now reads that "Razer Zephyr is not a certified N95 mask, medical device, respirator, surgical mask or personal protective equipment (PPE) and is not meant to be used on medical or clinical settings."

My thoughts

Seems like Razer played with words "N95 Grade" is not the same as "N95 certified", so it's a similar situation like Oneplus not getting IP certification while still making their phones waterproof. Except Razer used N95 in their marketing.

whether it is, was or is not n95, it's still a colossally stupid product.....

Seems like a trend for razer lately. CES brought up so much stupid stuff from them. I wonder if they're just in it for the memes by now.

If someone did not use reason to reach their conclusion in the first place, you cannot use reason to convince them otherwise.

These are clearly PR stunts that are probably cheaper and more effective than running actual product ad campaigns.

Unlike cloth face coverings, which can be machine-washed and worn dozens of times, the best N95 masks are only effective when worn once or twice. You should discard the masks immediately afterward; they are not meant to be washed and reused.

Most N95 respirators are manufactured for use in construction and other industrial type jobs that expose workers to dust and small particles. They are regulated by the National Personal Protective Technology Laboratory (NPPTL) in the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), which is part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

However, some N95 respirators are intended for use in a healthcare setting. Specifically, single-use, disposable respiratory protective devices used and worn by healthcare personnel during procedures to protect both the patient and healthcare personnel from the transfer of microorganisms, body fluids, and particulate material. These surgical N95 respirators are class II devices regulated by the FDA, under 21 CFR 878.4040, and CDC NIOSH under 42 CFR Part 84.

lol woops, sounds like they didn't get a legal review of their marketing and probably got a hand slap.

Yeah not sure why they thought they could get away with straight false advertising. Even if they said n95 grade vs certified they would still be misleading as I doubt the type of protection you get would be near what you get with an n95 mask.
