Why Does LTT Cover Mainly High End Products?

itisyeetimetoday

I get that Linus wants to play and review high end, flashy devices/tech cause it makes for good thumbnails and stuff, but besides GPU reviews, LTT seems to only cover high end devices, especially laptops and CPU, never or rarely dipping into even higher end mid range, much less low end devices. Any reason in particular?

That's what companies like to showcase, so that's what they get sent. They're more of an entertainment channel, they don't really do reviews anymore; if anything, it's mostly an overview, or quick look.

The only true reason to know would be to ask Mr. Sebastian himself.

Taking a guess, I'd say at least part of the reason would be that Linus himself has always advocated getting used top end parts instead of new low end parts, and I'd agree. Back before the market went nuts, you could get a 1080 Ti for ~$400-500, where as the similarly performing 2080 went for $800, so it would make sense to save $400 and get the last gen card instead. To him, the main reason to buy new would be to get the latest and greatest, and otherwise you might as well save money and get last gen parts. Granted, this is all assumptions, and I'm sure there's more to it.

The point of LTT nowadays is more for entertainment, showing what crazy stuff you can do with the latest and greatest hardware (and also sponsored product reviews - so manufacturers naturally send over the highest end machine they can to flex on us peasants).

They covered this a few times.

In a nutshell... Pretty much most low end products will be inferior compared to their second hand counter parts at the same price range. This is definitely the case today with GPUs as everything on the low end are cards that have been around for almost a decade at this point. Take the GT 710, you can still buy one new for about 100 bucks. This is a card from 2013. I don't think we need to say more about how much performance you're going to get from a card like that compared to the built in graphics on CPUs today.

There are a lot of YT channels that focus on mid-range and budget tech, and I would encourage people to branch out and try some of them if they haven't already done so instead of only watching LTT. Even for high-end stuff if you want serious reviews there are better channels to watch. LMG's wheelhouse is really off the wall "Just to see if we can" projects and looks at bleeding edge and niche technology.

Corps aren't your friends. "Bottleneck calculators" are BS. Only suckers buy based on brand. It's your PC, do what makes you happy.  If your build meets your needs, you don't need anyone else to "rate" it for you. And talking about being part of a "master race" is cringe. Watch this space for further truths people need to hear.

I think Linus has it too good and needs to be punished.

Maybe chain him up in the reviewing dungeon and see how many reviews he can do back to back of some just really solid midrange options.

LTT hasn't been about general products in years. Its been mostly for entertainment and views for like last 5-7 years. Still, I would say that about 3rd of their content would fit the range of "general consumer". Though maybe its still mostly on Short Circuit than on main.

Honestly, I think the high end is the only place for LTT these days. It's their niche. Everyone and their brother has a YouTube channel reviewing low-end or mid-range products. We don't need another review of the Core i5 11400 or Ryzen 5 5600G.

I like it.  It seems everyone else focuses on "budget" stuff.

For every high end video there are 1000x more budget minded videos.

In 2015 I saw a LTT video on a 4k monitor and I went 4k.

In 2019 I saw a LTT video about gaming on a 120hz 4k OLD TVs. Now I do all my gaming on them.

So LTT has change the way I do things even though I don't always agree with them.

He doesn't cover it all.  How many UST projectors has he covered?  I mean, sure--cover only the high-end....but why is UST completely absent apart from like 1 Dell?

Hm I see, but what about mid range products? I think short circuit covers more mid range hardware than LTT these days. I can see why not to cover the low end, but what about the mid range laptops, processor, etc?

Any recommendations? Linus has great production quality in my opinion, maybe I should just punch in the products I'm looking for and search for those, but I really like sticking with a couple channels rather than hoping around.

Gamers Nexus, Hardware Unboxed. Jayz2cents is more overclocky and memey. He's kind of out there sometimes.

I'm not actually trying to be as grumpy as it seems.

I will find your mentions of Ikea or Gnome and I will /s post.

They still do, just not all of them.

For instance...

And recently

It probably doesn't seem like they cover midrange all that often because of the sheer choice you have on the midrange compared to the high end. And with pricing as crazy as it is today. To most people, anything is considered high end today. GTX 1660s might as well be high end today if they cost 600 bucks a pop.

I don't consider LTT a review channel/organization anymore. They're more like, influencers or hype beats or whatever the term for it is. Watch Gamers Nexus or Hardware Unboxed for actual reviews and news.

And the main channel is shit in my opinion, unsubbed long ago. The side channels like Short Circuit and LMG Clips are much better and actually put out good videos every now and then.
