The upscaler training part is neat. You already have the higher quality and you purposely dumb it down and then tell the upscaler, here's this low quality crap and you need to get it to that high quality. Once it's trained, you apply it to the higher quality video and it'll upscale the higher quality one to even higher quality because it now knows how exactly, but now doing it further from original high quality. So simple and so clever at the same time.

So can those artifacts actually be removed? I get that Demonic uses it for extra effect, but I'm wondering how much extra work you need to do to make that footage actually look good and clean.

This is some really impressive ... next level stuff.  Every kind of entertainment will eventually have this.  Might take decades but it will come to pass.

Yes they can.

I think the issue here could be one of 3 things: The sensor size (yes that maters, imagine what would have been accomplished if they used a bigger one, if this was the issue), The budget, The algorithm they used (maybe due to budget or to get the effect they wanted which if the case then there's no issue). The technology is here using multi angle pictures to stitch together to create a 360 object while ignoring the background (you can do it on your phone! Albeit only photos). I just don't understand why they simply didn't paint the background green/blue and algorithmically remove the cameras (might have been cheaper that way too).

 

It's a cool idea with great potential in the future, but if it's never going to out preform a green screen and past tricks then it's DOA.

This is also an interesting watch too: (just a warning a small section has a video that might not be so work friendly)

 

I'm going to skip this movie all together the trailer even makes it look like a dud... I might pick it up if it goes on sale for cheap tho...

From a graphics standpoint, it doesn't actually look impressive. It might just be YouTube compression, but compared to Alex then the rendered stuff looks like the elder scrolls Oblivion.... And no, I am not talking about the artefacting, I can look past that lack of post processing.

 

Though, as a friend of mine once say: "It doesn't matter if something is technically realistic, what matters is that it looks realistic."

Ie, one can have all the texture and point cloud data one wants, but if it isn't used "correctly" then it will look like garbage.

probably can be used with something like depth sensors that was used on phones and the like, to recreate things in 3D models.

As now it seems to recreate the same thing all the time, getting out of place artifacts (maybe they do have a version that reduces this or removes it).

While rather having a 3D model, knowing about movements and putting that in future renderings and could do another 3D model or assign different models (like skin vs clothes, static vs moving objects). That using and knowing what information is from what "object" and apply it to that one, nealy like becoming an height map on a person with cameras from the sides. or scan a full object, take it in 3D world then using the cameras for position/texture like when in motion or physics applied, that will change that scanned object with limiters stopping it from going random places by artifacts.

Basically more compute time = less artifacts.  Some cleanup might be needed but mostly just more time for the AI to do its thing.
