Seagate brings out 6TB HDD, did not need no Steekin' Shingles

Seagate sub LaCie has pre-announced a 6TB near line disk drive from its parent and it doesn't appear to use the slow write shingled magnetic recording technology.

LaCie's news came out with the NAB event in Las Vegas, which opened on Friday. There are details of the drive on Seagate's website, although the drive has not been announced and is not yet available.

 

The Enterprise Capacity drive has these features:

• 7,200rpm spin speed,
• 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6TB capacity points,
• 128MB cache,
• encryption option with Secure Instant Erase or SED FIPS 140-2 option,
• SAS 12Gbit/s and SATA 6Gbit/s interface options and
• a 25 per cent increase in areal density.

 

Holy batman Seagate! A 6TB has been pre-announced at Las Vegas, I think their highest corresponding drive was capped at 4TB I think, so a 50% increase in capacity is pretty good. Pricing isn't available yet though!

Doubtable, It'll just be priced higher than the others.

 

I'm not very impressed or excited. Prices of drives are pretty much sitting at the lowest we're going to see them.

The price of this drive will be overly expensive, and either way, is it really needed?

 

We don't need new innovation on the HDD front, we need more innovation on the SSD and the SATA (or a different solution) side of things.

HDD are good for mass storage, but a smaller solution, and more of them with a RAID set up would be preferred.

They also run for about 1300 dollars right now. I bet it's subject to change when Seagate enters the market.

Those 2 TB + HHDs seem to be more unreliable than the smaller drives. Might be better to just buy a couple of smaller drives, though for maximum capacity 6 TB ofc...

a good 4 TB cost around 1500-2000 SEK, if you want a 5 TB or more you have to pay 3000 extra sek for one more TB

Like using a couple of 2 TB drives over a 6TB drive. The larger drives have also been found to have slower reads and writes than the 1-2tb counterparts.

Dayium, If I buy like 4 or 5 of these I could just get a massive amount of music, movies and games and continue with my plan of going off to live in a mountain as a hermit, I would only need to go to a town once per year for some supplies and a few downloads.
