should i buy a server for fun?

i found this x3850 M2 for $200 on kijiji, with 4 Xeon X7460 and 128 ddr2. if i bought it what would i be able to do?

Use it like a computer.

 

I mean it's just a computer with fancier hardware. It's not powerful at all or anything it's a very old system with the power of about a ryzen 2700x IF all the cpu's can work together on a render task.

sorry, 128 GB of RAM?!? thats insnae, but sadly only DDR2 so not as impressive

I don't agree with @jaslion, it would make for a pretty badn general computer, but a server like that would make for a very good games server for you and your buddies

I personally am looking for a server to run a minecraft server, but you can run any games server if it supports it

I disagree here also as the single core performance is pretty terrible on these chips so a lot of game servers will run quite poorly as most are single threaded or need good single threaded performance.

The xeon is okay-ish, and running it as a games server (especially with that amount of RAM) wouldbe a much better application then using it as a general use PC

All in all dude, maybe dont get it unless you REALLY have a use for it, or have someone who you can resell it to.

Buy a used/refurbished computer for less than half of that if you want to mess around with a server, here's an example : https://www.ebay.com/itm/124792144480

 

Memory is a lot, but it's pointless unless you have applications that will use/need it - the cpu otherwise is low performance, the server will be relatively noisy and power hungry

That thing is literaly only gonna be useful for distributed computing applications like folding @ home or boinc

Although it is still using fsb and it is a 45nm cpu, so if its like lga 775 or socket 478 you might be able to bsel mod it and maybe even volt mod it

 

Ill go find some datasheets and see if i can find a pinout or something to be able to oc it

Page 17 is the fsb speeds you can set by manipulating the bsel, useless but i think its the same as lga 775

 

Page 19 is the voldtages you can set by manipulating the vid pins

 

Page 73-79 are the pins by number

 

Ill have to find the pinout so its easier to see which pins you need to mod

And no it isnt really hard to search this stuff up, just search for xeon 7400 datasheet and youll find it

 

Basically the same as lga 775 modding except that you cant cover a pin with tape to make it 0, youll have to connect it to a vss pin, you are prob gonna have to use a bare copper wire thats thin enough to not interfere with mounting or something

X7460 is the best cpu it seems for that socket

 

Maybe instead of bsel modding try setfsb or messing with your pll

Before you do that keep in mind that even IF you somehow manage to do a oc you'll go from a low end very bad single core performance cpu to a low end very bad single core cpu basically.
