Why the bitrate in newer LTT videos is so low?

The 1080p version of that painful pc build is 1920x960 30 fps - on my Firefox it defaults to AV1 and Opus audio :

The downloaded file is 1.78 GB (1,916,166,263 bytes)  ... divided by 1700 seconds you get 1127156 bytes or 9,017,253 bits or 9017 kbps (which includes the 128 kbps).

Yeah, sure, it's not an accurate, the audio is vbr, there's mp4 overhead, whatever, it will be about the same percentage of overhead and audio mess on the other track.

 

The holographic frame video has  same codec and resolution and uses  555 MB (582,871,670 bytes)  for a total of 11:43 or 703 seconds so divide those and you get 829120 bytes per second or 6,632,963 bits or 6632 kbps

 

So the new video has much lower bitrate compared to the other.

Could be Youtube cuts costs with encoding and bandwidth during the virus by reducing bitrates.

Could also be other things like for example it wouldn't surprise me if Youtube starts videos with some lower bitrates and if the video becomes popular (as in 10 mil views for that video) they may do a re-encode at a higher bitrate.

Meanwhile all videos from mid 2020 Looks like 720p, or sometimes even 480p at 1080p Youtube resolution. Look at the new steam deck video for comparison. You can literally spot the heavily compressed blocky areas at any moment in the video, just pause it and see for yourself.

 

Is it because majority of LTT viewers watch the videos on phones, so they want to be more efficient? I hope not, because its kinda annoying.

Youtube adjust bitrate based on your connection. Its your connection quality being bad, not the videos bitrate being low.

My Mistake, I have 150 MBps D/U, so it should be enough right? And That doesn't explain why I can visually see the difference between an LTT video in Nov 2019 and August 2021

But again, that doesnt explain why One video from LTT in 2019 looks sharper and better on the same resolution than the other one in 2021. I don't think you know what ur talking about, no offense.

Ah, that argument again. No it is not enough, you might experience this issue even if you get a gigabit connection. This all depends on your ISPs configuration, for example one of my connections despite being 30Mbps, gets 100Mbps connection to youtube while all other traffic is limited to 30Mbps. Google/ISPs also has cache servers/CDNs depending on the traffic/population. Looking at both videos, I am not experiencing any bitrate related artifacts in either one of them, so it is your connection/location/ISP.

No most ISPS throttle youtube. Right click and do show stats for nerds to see the current bandwidth. When I use a VPN my throughout triples

Hmm that makes sense, but does youtube micromanages it for every other video for every other instance of me playing that video?

My ISP doesnt throttle anything as far as I'm aware, they are a pretty barebone service provider (which has its benefits) But again, I can clearly see the difference between the two different videos played at the same time, that shouldn't happen if my internet is at fault.

Testing here, the ROG reboot is using the av1 encoder and the unbiased review is using vp9, which can totally explain the difference in quality.

I've got vp9 for all the videos on my side, not sure why it's different for you, that's odd.

Check the codec used and what's happening. Certain content will cause more artifacting

and actually... on that note.. we shouldnt be comparing studio-shot footage with showfloor footage for this exact reason. different cameras, different lighting setup.

For what it's worth I see the same thing. I used a program ( I don't think I can say the name of it, but take a guess ) to download the 2 videos offline in original quality and the 2019 ROG rig reboot does look noticeably better on a 1440p IPS display. The Steam deck video from today has compression artifacts that are easily visible.

 

If I had to guess they used significantly higher compression since they were on the go and wanted to get the video out fast? Just a guess though.

 

I have only checked those 2 videos but I'll go through a few more randomly.

that's a mixture of sub-optimal lighting, glare on an otherwise very flat coloured area, and compression doing what it's supposed to do.

Sorry for being passive aggressive back there.

 

I was talking about the overall sharpness of the image, and I don't think My internet has anything to do with that if I can notice the difference between two videos at the same time. 

Compare these two screenshots again, The first one is from (40) This Holographic Photo Frame is CRAZY - Looking Glass Portrait - YouTube Ignore Linus's hand, but look at his face, body, other objects in foreground which are focused on while recording. Now compare it to the other screenshot, I can't help but notice that the newer videos are simply less sharp and blurry-ish, thats why I assumed that the new videos are lower bitrate. 

I even used my other 60 MBps internet to see if there's any difference from different ISP.

The 1080p version of that painful pc build is 1920x960 30 fps - on my Firefox it defaults to AV1 and Opus audio :

The downloaded file is 1.78 GB (1,916,166,263 bytes)  ... divided by 1700 seconds you get 1127156 bytes or 9,017,253 bits or 9017 kbps (which includes the 128 kbps).

Yeah, sure, it's not an accurate, the audio is vbr, there's mp4 overhead, whatever, it will be about the same percentage of overhead and audio mess on the other track.

 

The holographic frame video has  same codec and resolution and uses  555 MB (582,871,670 bytes)  for a total of 11:43 or 703 seconds so divide those and you get 829120 bytes per second or 6,632,963 bits or 6632 kbps

 

So the new video has much lower bitrate compared to the other.

Could be Youtube cuts costs with encoding and bandwidth during the virus by reducing bitrates.

Could also be other things like for example it wouldn't surprise me if Youtube starts videos with some lower bitrates and if the video becomes popular (as in 10 mil views for that video) they may do a re-encode at a higher bitrate.
