I was digging through the tweets and someone said "Physx cards, but for ray tracing". That sounds cool tbh.

OK, I would buy that. My workstation's BIOS has poor compatibility with RTX 30 series cards and the last released update was 2019, for the 20 series cards. So yeah, I could use that...

A quick google search yields no results for this apparent investment company, and even if it is real, it'll be 3dfx by name only.

This makes no sense, when 3DFX filed for bankruptcy the only asset they had left was their registered names, Nvidia bought everything else.

This is basically another Atari situation, a shitcrawler has bought up the name and is now going to slap it on everything in the hopes they can make a quick buck off the name of someone that used to be popular amongst the people who are responsible for the current retro boom.

3dfx existed so long ago (20 years) people who were involved with the brand know what's what and the youngesters won't even have a clue what 3dfx even is.

Yeeeeeeah.  Outside of a few keeners, the 3DFX Brand is not really valuable.  If you spun up an board company and started selling GPUs with AMD or nVidia chips, much of the market isn't gonna go 'OOOO I want the 3DFX One!'

Honestly the only value to the 3DFX brand would be to sell new branded merch to nostalgic millennials.  And yes, yes I would buy a new 3DFX mouse pad.  Maybe even a t-shirt.  But that brand isn't much value to sell hardware.

i agree this is what would probably happen - but this isnt real, they didnt even register the trademark (seemingly)… seems they're  just tweeting this stuff "for the lols".

"New items in development" include Voodoo 6 PCI lmao. Though their other tweet says only 10% investment in gpu products. "Galaxian Tablet" is an interesting entry in there.

Sounds pretty realistic in alignment with my expectations if this was real - another tech stuff brand on the market with gpus as a side-dish while wagging the brand around happily.

The Voodoo 6 PCI is weird given AGP was really required for top performance. So, why would we want an AGP card from 2001 used on PCI in 2021? It's weird even from nostalgia perspective and fact we don't have PCI slots anymore either. It's all PCIe.

Interesting for sure, I'm stil 99% sure it will amount to cheap Chinese crap but I'm willing to hold off on final judgement until we actually see the end result.

Here's my current pie chart

10% Real

44% Fake

44% Atari the second

*2% margin of error

Right now everyone and their dogs are trying to buy up PCI GPUs (and especially Voodoo cards) and PCI is the better choice in this case since going with AGP restricts the potential customers to machines from 2000 - 2005(ish) where as you could stick a modern PCI card into anything from 386 to a Core2/Athlon64.

And probably leveraging the same way as Matrox did where it's actually just cheap older AMD/Radeon GPUs under license. Or worse, ARM GPU tech.

Wait, did that actually happen? I always thought Matrox did quite well after pulling out of consumer electronics by focusing on medical imaging equipment.

A few modern motherboards have PCI slots. ASUS PRIME B460-PLUS for example has 2 PCI slots 🙂  (my Gigabyte Z170XP-SLI motherboard also has 2 PCI slots)

Yea they did, not calling them cheap crap but all they really were hardware wise for the GPU core was older Radeon. Matrox was more about validated and calibrated firmware and software and other overarching support.

Still I loved them more when they were making their own GPU technology, as bad as it turned out before they gave up on that for the most part.

Over a couple of threads, I've pointed out why I think this is BS, but now I've had the time to really reflect on the situation, I've come to the conclusion of "What reputable company would revive itself after 20 years and only do their PR and only have any kind of presence on Twitter, with no site and no other social accounts, no video announcement, no stream?" ESPECIALLY when revealing a "roadmap".
