Does Removing CMOS Battery Remove BIOS Update Or Only BIOS Settings?

Michael5carn

New build has been running fine for over a week but today it has no display. Opened the case and saw only half my case fans running, CPU fan off, GPU fans and lights off. The motherboard VGA light on - meaning its not detecting my GPU. I check all the wires/cables connected, didn't see any bent pins. I saw guide suggesting I remove CMOS battery and that might fix issue.

I originally updated the bios when installing new ryzen 5600x in my MSI B550 gaming Edge Wifi motherboard. Will I need to update the bios again after I remove the CMOS battery?

BIOS is stored in the mobo's dedicated eeprom chip which can retain its content even if power is off. I'd be pretty inconvinient if it didn't every time theres a power outage 😆

No.

In laymans terms

BIOS = ROM chip

CMOS = RAM chip

if RAM loses power the info goes poof*, if ROM loses power nothing really happens.

*this is also why there is a CMOS battery, otherwise every time you turn off the PC you'd lose all settings

The direction tells you... the direction
