Summary

 Nvidia showing off that RTX GPU's can run on arm.

 

 

 

My thoughts

This is impressive. Nvidia seems to be pushing RTX to arm devices. Maybe soon we might get something for the switch?

So why is RTX noteworthy? Is there something about the technology that is x86 dependent? Or is this more just a demo of an ARM based CPU playing a game with an Nvidia GPU that so happens to have RTX so it make a good opportunity for marketing?

This isn't nearly as impressive as it seems, as it's still using desktop-grade graphics (which we know don't exist in stores) so this aint coming to actual mobile devices anytime soon.

 

This demo basically saying "We made ARM drivers for RTX features!"

 

What we're MUCH more likely to see is FSR on Mobile devices, could even see it showing up on the Switch without having to do a hardware update.

I feel like this is working towards something like a next gen switch, probably what rumors are talking about, and mixed the oled switch and more powerful switch together. Something like a 8cu rtx gpu with a next gen tegra for a next gen switch

Now this is interesting stuff but not power efficient for mobile. They will need to figure out how to pack a mx250 level and above GPU into 15w CPU and GPU package (very doable since the mx250 is 10w and a arm chip can easily be just a few watts) to compete with Intel Xe and AMD Apu's. Very interesting non the less.

Yeah they could stick a mx250 or mx350 and a arm chip and get a 15w package with better fps than even the new steam deck at 15w.

Am I missing something? Doesn't the Switch already have an Nvidia GPU? If you're talking about just a better one, possible, but I wouldn't count on it. I believe they meant stuff like RTX and DLSS, which likely won't happen due to hardware limitations (an probably no new revisions, as you said).

Probably more for car infotainment systems, kiosk hardware, and smarttv's. The average SmartTV is just weak and ridiculously underpowered.

Compair a Vega gpu and a rdna 2 gpu

Only in terms of them compiling the drivers, the math etc all runs on the GPU and thus does not care about the cpu ARC.

I thought it's about ARM chip with RTX graphics built in. It's just RTX 3060 running along with ARM CPU. How is this anything special? It's just a matter of kernel/driver support in Linux which already supports ARM processors. They just paired ARM with RTX 3060. Nothing special.

 

What will be special is Exynos 2200 which will be an actual 888+ based ARM processor with Radeon RDNA2 based graphics built into same chip. That thing will feature an actual ray tracing capable GPU module. Given NVIDIA's interest in ARM I thought they've done the Dimensity 1200 + NVIDIA GPU on same chip, but it's not that at all.

I think, that's some sort of signal to the industry, telling them that Nvidia is ready for supporting the "Windows on ARM"-Transition. 

 

I would not be surprised if Nvidia even works on making their Tegra-chips Windows capable (at the moment, Windows is not supported on their Jetson Modules (Industrial SoMs using the Tegra SoCs))

That is paired with a laptop cpu an arm chip only uses a few watts. The total would easily be less than 15w.

Doubt it since considering M1 CPU only can use up to 27W on the Firestorm and Icestorm cores alone. In GPU workloads the total chip power is actually lower at around 17W. Something not as demanding as GTAV far as I know (could be wrong), since former is GPU only benchmark not mixed CPU + GPU like a game.

 

Either way dedicated 10W to a GPU is not the same thing as shared SoC power, not even 15W (CPU) + 10W (GPU) to 25W (SoC). 5800U iGPU would almost never be getting 10W allocation in a mixed workload. Bump that TDP up and it'll do 80 FPS so an RDNA2 GPU core rather than modified Vega would at least match the MX350.
