MSI 3080ti vs 3090 FE

Hey there dudes and dudettes 👋🏻

Just a quick question:

If I could get a msi supreme x 3080ti, or a 3090 founders edition for the same price, wich would you go for?

Usecase is gaming, and I really want either a 80ti or a 90 as I am using a Samsung G9.

Wish you all a splendid day

The 3090 should be a bit faster, so for the same price that is what I'd go for. (Oops, confused the Ti with the 3080, but due to more VRAM, I'd still go with the 3090)

I would undervolt either card(thinking about the coolers), and if both are available for the same price, 3090 for sure.

Same chip, 3090 is not nerfed though... at least not as much as 3080Ti

See, my thought was that on the one hand the thermals on the MSI card are going to be much lower, and for gaming, both cards should be about equal. On the other hand why not go for the higher end model, right? ^^

Not going to liquid cool btw

Why is that though?

By the specs 3090 is better overall - https://www.forbes.com/sites/antonyleather/2021/06/02/nvidia-rtx-3080-ti-vs-rtx-3080-rtx-3090-and-rx-6900-xt-which-should-you-buy/

I prefer the 3080ti because it's a decent custom card.

Performance is pretty much the same because 3090's 2% core count advantage is tiny, double the memory dont turn useful unless in specific tasks (for work mostly) and in games you could turn on DLSS to further reduce VRAM usage. Meanwhile 3090 FE has really hot backside memory temperatures (3080ti doesnt have memory on the back) and the cooler is extremely annoying to maintain (i.e. cleaning) because it's difficult to take apart.

According to tests and benchmarks the 80ti has a small edge over the 90. I guess it's to do with lower Temps due to not having 12gb of 100 degree ram on the backside surrounding the chip

Just make sure you have a beefy enough HIGH QUALITY psu for either. If it is the hx850i in your signature then you are good to go. Just try to use separate cables for each connector on the card. (or well each connector to the 12pin on the FE one).

Got myself a seasonic Syncro Q704 case + psu.

850w either platinum or titanium, can't remember of the top of my head.

According to seasonics customer service they tested everything up to a  11900k + 3090 combo and had no issues

Going to pair my future card to be with a 5900X, so I would come nowhere near a 10900k's power consumption I guess

I only found reviews indicating the opposite, like:

Not a big gap at all though.

Good to go. Just keep in mind to have that case full of fans as it isn't the best airflow case.

Raw performance wise the 3090 is slightly better if not similar(or slightly slower out of the box). No question about that.

Thermal and noise? definitely goes to the Suprim.

Since the price is similar, I personally will take 3090 because the Founder Edition is sexy af.

yes but Its not about faster is better its about price and what the differance its not more than 5 to 10 percent in best scenarios without mention you can overclock the 3080ti to be like 3090 in performance or even better since the FE cards is meh in overclock

i agree its kind of a wash, but id probably go for more RAMS anyway, never cant have enough  Vram (texture junkie here lol)

Yeh, the latest nVidia FE cards look great!

And they are at least adequate at cooling.
