Can the GTX 980 Ti handle 1440p gaming?

Guest

I've currently got one 1080p 144Hz monitor and one 1080p 75Hz monitor. I play mainly BeamNG.drive, GTA V, Automation, Forza Horizon 4, Rocket League, Minecraft (with shaders and mods), and Dolphin.

Was considering replacing the 1080p/75Hz monitor with a 1440p monitor of the same refresh rate for some eye candy in games like Minecraft, Rocket League, and FH4. Perhaps Dolphin as well. I'd be shooting for 60fps on medium to high settings. The idea would be that I could use the higher refresh rate but lower resolution monitor for more competitive scenarios (I play the occasional CS:GO... no, I'm not good lol) and the higher resolution monitor for games that I want to look pretty.

Don't want to invest in a monitor without knowing if my 6 year old GPU can actually handle it... I know it's tired, but I'm holding out for an RTX 3070 and refuse to pay four figures for a card of that caliper. Can it do it, or should I stick to 1080p?

Full system specifications:

Intel Core i9-10900K

32GB Trident Z Neo 3600MHz CL16

EVGA GTX 980 TI SC ACX 2.0

ASRock B460M Steel Legend

Segotep GP850

With older games like the ones you've listed, it should handle it fine. The 980ti was marketed as a 4K gaming card when most of those games came out.

Good to hear, should hopefully do BeamNG fine as well, though that game is 5 years old and shouldn't have too much trouble.

yea it should be ok. but if you wanted to you could do a small upgrade gtx 1070. it's only about 5% faster and has a large frame buffer as it has 8gb over the 6gb of ram the 980 ti has.

on Ebay the card cost about the same both running around 450$

The 980 Ti actually has more raw horsepower than the GTX 1070, if anything the 980 Ti is the one with the ever so slight edge among the two. And for that ridiculous price, it's not worth it lol.

I paid $200 for my 980 Ti, and to get almost nothing in return for the $450 the 1070 costs currently doesn't really make sense.

I just check the sold listings on Ebay both card are selling about 450$ as stated before. as for performance I beg to differ.  but I do agree if you cant get the max value from selling the 980 ti it's not worth it.

You can try 1440 right now with a custom resolution or DSR.

I had the exact same video card (actually 2 of them in SLI) and I was doing 4K so I think you will be fine.
