Bad joke gone wrong?

Hello. In the recent video "I'm selling GPUs BELOW MSRP!" i noticed something a bit off taste. If you watch, in the halo game segments you will notice that the guests name in game that the guest players name in the game is "misoprostol". I work as a pharmacy technician and this is a common drug commonly prescribed to induce abortion. Now I have no judgments against the people that use this drug for this purpose, but i thought that having "ltt killed by abortion" was in really bad taste. What do you guys think? At first i thought it was this guest that input the name, but i looked back and previous players had the same name in game. I'm confused.

I am unbothered by this. Because I don't mind dark humor.

I just sort of feel like it was put it and sort of went under the radar. I doubt linus intended this to be put in a video sponsored by EVGA

EVGA only cares about the advertisement the media group agreed to. Other than that, it's their content. Pretty much do whatever they want. At least that's my take on it.

Given that 99+% of people who watched the video wouldn't even know what it is (or even see it), who cares? People use names online that i guarantee they don't know what it really is, which is more than likely the case here.

Hell, one of my friends for the longest time used the name "Meniscus" because he thought it sounded cool. When in all actuality, it's just the name for the curved water line a liquid makes in a container.

I feel like comparing your friend group to a famous Youtube personality with hundreds of thousands of viewers is a bit disingenuous. I doubt that someone randomly typed in this name, as its a specific drug name. They knew what they were doing, and the idea of "haha linus got aborted" was funny to them.

yes but who is "they" you're talking about? they had randoms come in to play, they would need a second account, so either it was another LTT staff member's, or one of the participant's accounts, and i doubt they really cared to change the name on the secondary.

I don't like where society is going where every single thing needs to be analysed and scrutinised in every possible way just in case it might be offensive to someone. People shouldn't have to walk to eggshells for such a tiny irrelevant thing such as someone's online gaming name. For someone in your position that knows what this drug is, then your automatic assumption of "ltt killed by abortion" more so reflects badly on yourself for coming to that conclusion.

That said, I see no issue with this. The vast majority of people watching the video wouldn't know what Misoprostol is, or even care to look in the top left to see their their in-game name.

If it's on purpose, then it is a bit of dark humor. If not, it's likely just the account of one of the employees and that's their username or something. Nothing to make a scene about.

If I could change two things about modern society, it would be this:

1. STOP MAKING A CONTROVERSY ABOUT EVERYTHING. If something is offensive to 2 people on Earth, it doesn't need to be brought to the attention of the other 7794798737. So what if someone at LMG did this? How many people:

a. Know what it means

b. Know what it's used for

c. Get offended by it

 

There is absolutely NO REASON we need to care about what absolutely everyone thinks. None at all. You shouldn't try and offend 7000000000 people, but you shouldn't really worry about offending 10 people in a random town on the outskirts of Texas. 

Not everything needs to be overanalyzed to the point where the casual statement "oh crap I'm going to die" in relation to a video game becomes an indication that they're going to commit suicide.

 

2. We shouldn't need to clean up other people's messes for themselves.

I'm pro life.  I find this joke pretty benign.  It's not an endorsement of the drug or the procedure.  It's acknowledging that the drug/procedure exists.  

And you know what?  It's actually a pretty clever user name.  It's not so obvious that it doesn't require thought (ala the username "ABORTION"), but it does give people a breadcrumb to follow.  Those who choose to do so (or the select few who know the name already) get it: "LTT killed by abortion" -- which makes a sardonic kind of sense (they were killed by a medication designed to kill people) while also implicitly making the absurd notion that people who are 20+ years old can be aborted.  Reminds me of that episode of South Park, actually 🙂
