Please keep this thread civil and not turn it into an argument about mining in general.

Summary

A photo of internal testing of the CMP 40HX mining card from ASUS has leaked to Videocardz. It shows eight power-optimized mining cards which likely had adjusted memory clocks working in a cluster of eight cards. The photo showed the card running at 43.77 MH/s, higher than the 36 MH/s that Nvidia advertises. We have so far seen no AIB cards for the 40HX, based on the Turing TU106 chip (the same as the 2060 and 2070). This card features 8GB of GDDR6 and a TDP of 185W by default. In the testing from ASUS, the TDP seems to have been reduced to 135W. The same source to Videocardz also leaked the ASUS pricing, with the 40HX launching at $699 US. They also said that the CMP 30HX, based on Turing TU116 (the same as the 1650 Super, 1660, 1660 Super, and 1660 Ti) and with 6GB of GDDR6 will launch at $599.

My thoughts

I don't have much hope that these cards will alleviate the current shortage of GPUs, since I don't think many miners want this card due to the lower resale value. I wonder if these cards could be turned into a normal GPU like the 1060 mining cards could. Using these as a normal GPU would of course only be worth it if the price is lower due to it flooding the market if crypto crashes, since $599 for a 1650 Super-1660 Ti and $699 for a 2060-2070 would be not worth it, even considering the current market.

If anything this actually hurts the supply of GPUs to gamers. They are taking out precious supplies of GPU cores for a lineup no one in their right mind will buy.

The CMP 40HX seems to be based off the TU106 chip. It shouldn't hurt Ampere chips too much since Ampere is 12nm and not 8nm.

As @Moonzy said, they could have just started producing these Turing GPUs as a normal card instead of a mining card that miners don't want.

What I'm trying to say is that they could have allocated all of the TU106 cards they're producing as a normal card instead of using some of them as a mining card, and it would do more to help the current GPU shortage.

At this point, I think most people who want a GPU right now and don't currently have one just want anything better than a GT 1030/710. This is shown by the fact that RTX 2060s are going for $600+ used on eBay right now.

Making this lineup would actually hurt gamers more, as a part of that scarce silicon would be divided to make these "mining" cards. Essentially less silicon for consumer cards, which leads to worse scarcity.

I love that many here think they know better than nvidia and the actual miners who are the actual target of those cards. To me, there isn't any new information here other than the alleged pricing. It was obvious even from the original announcement the performance numbers from nvidia were stock settings, and it is up to the miner to tune it to their preferences. Why not do it at the factory? Because that implies making assumptions about what is best. Crypto isn't a single thing or static. So nvidia have a baseline spec, and it can be tuned from there. No different to buying a gaming GPU.

 

As for why not use the chips to make gaming GPUs, probably because nvidia will be in a no win situation with forum threads like this. There will be jokes about selling old cards, and no matter what the pricing is, it'll be called wrong. A low price will still mean the miners buy it all. A higher price would lead to allegations of taking advantage of the situation. That doesn't rule out making more gaming cards on older generation, but it will be an interesting sales pitch. It might be they only supply OEMs with it, and not put them up individually for retail as they continue to roll out Ampere cards.

Good point, I forgot about that. Unless they've been saving up bad GPUs for a long time and have sufficient stock to address mining demand, question is are they making new Turing GPUs? It doesn't rule out the possibility of making new gaming ones at some point.

This CMP lineup only hurts gamers and gaming GPU supply, the GPUs could be used to make more gaming cards, and the VRAM and other components used to make these mining specific cards could be used to make more Turing cards.

In my opinion these CMP cards are a waste of silicon and are just more e-waste.

Well they failed validation for a reason, so no. That's if Nvidia is to be believed that every die is not suitable for Geforce. If they could be cut down to supply a lesser SKU they would have been, these would be the ones that cannot or would have to be cut down below the specifications of any existing product so Nvidia would have to create a RTX 2050 or something like that.

 

Either way it's a lot more complex situation, of course only if we believe what Nvidia said in the first place.

Those mining GPU have to have certain cores and minimum spec too, just like a gaming GPU, so I don't see why they can't just be a gaming GPU other than Nvidia not wanting them to be one

Let's assume nvidia is telling the truth, and not simply binning old parts because it would undermine the GPU's they want to sell.

 

If that's the case, why are they failing validation. Do they have less CUDA cores? Do they operate somewhere in a space that precludes them from being a Super/Ti/Neither model of the GPU they would otherwise be? We probably won't find out unless someone buys one and pulls it apart, and then tries to run it like a GPU.

 

Like if they were really failing validation, is it the video encoder/decoder failing? Is it the PCIe link speed? Being honest here would make people more willing to buy the "oh these weren't good enough to be GPU" line. But then still, why waste VRM's VRAM, and other parts that could have been used to produce a full GPU while we have a shortage of GPU's.

Also you're making the assumption that VRMs, VRAM are the limiting factor, not the GPUs. Is this the case? We probably will not get the details but it does feel like the making of the GPU chips are the limiting factor, hence the looking towards older generation on older process. The other components probably aren't the limiting factor.

If the AIB's were taking "Broken" GPU parts and pairing them with non-validating VRAM parts and cheaper VRM's to produce these cards that only fail validation when run at expected power settings, then that is STILL just wasting parts.

I'm making no such assumption. Do you really think an AIB has 3 years of VRAM and VRM parts in stock? No, it's very likely their logistics runs on the same cycle as their access to GPU parts, and if they aren't getting GPU's then they aren't ordering the other parts that go on the PCB.

The HX30 is essentially a 1650 or 1660Ti with 6GB of VRAM. The 1660ti has 6GB of GDDR6. The 1650 has 4GB of GDDR5. These are the same cards being put in OEM systems because they can't get 3060's, which guess what, also use GDDR6.

 

So again, why waste all the video memory on these HX cards.
