I am wanting to build a computer. My current laptop is a piece of garbage, and I cannot take this awful, awful performance.

Parts:

Thermaltake Versa H21
MSI B450 GAMING PLUS MAX AM4
Rosewill ARC-550
G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2666
WD Blue NVMe M.2 250GB (boot drive)
Seagate BarraCuda 2TB 7200RPM (the storage drive)
SanDisk Cruzer Blade 8GB (iso drive)
Acer EK220Q Abi 22"
MSI GeForce GT 1030
AMD Ryzen 5 1600

I want to install Windows 7 on it, and yes, I have figured out how to do it. I've done research. I do mainly work online and music production, and my current laptop is ABSOLUTE GARBAGE for this. I have an Athlon. Please don't yell. I won't do any HEAVY HEAVY gaming.

Is there anything I should worry about?

Looks alright, but two questions:

1. What's an ISO drive?

2. Why Windows 7? It's got some known and unpatched security vulnerabilities, is not supported by Microsoft period, and has trouble running some programs.

ISO drive is just where im going to burn the iso
Windows 7 has just given me better overall performance, speed, looks and doesn't need to be installed every 5 minutes like Windows 10.

Ah, ok. Your install drive.

Out of curiosity, when's the last time you tried Windows 10?
Windows 10 1503 is MUCH different than Windows 10 21H1, and all of the reinstalls I've had to do have been due to some fault of my own.

Current version is NOT 1909, it's 21H1.

1909 is 3 versions old now.

What hardware? Windows 10 is really slow on hdds, and ssds will be fast.

What tasks are slow?

Literally everything. I cannot open Firefox without my laptop locking up. Not even numlock works.

I'm pretty sure we can't help you on theoretical builds; although this does look like a realistic build...

Windows 7 is EoL and is no longer supported by Microsoft. There are security risks going into the future with Windows 7. Windows 10 is getting better slowly. Why are you building with a Ryzen 5 1600? What is your budget for such a build?

What does task manager look like?

Thats a pretty low end system, but if its locking up doing that it seems like a hardware issue, not a windows issue.

Really stay away from windows 7, its a security issue, and thirdparty app support is dropping soon, so things like web browsing won't work soon.

Ryzen 5 1600 is the only CPU from AMD i've seen that doesn't throw a fit about W7 as much as the newer ones. budget is $850 USD, although i am canadian, just to make it easier for the more common US peoples.

Yea looks like your using too much ram and its probably hitting swap. Programs keep getting bigger and need more ram, and 4gb really isn't enough now.

And windows 7 really won't help too much either as lots of the ram usage is due to programs, not your os.

Really go windows 10, you don't want to be using 7 here.

Oh ok...still not really any valid reason for still going with Windows 7.

I would try and find a used Ryzen 5 3600 that is working instead of the Ryzen 5 1600. Also, go with a 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4-3200 CL16 kit for a 3600.

Windows 8.1 then. I have a secondary laptop from 2009 that absolutely beats ass with it.

You still have a couple years left on Windows 8.1 in 2023, but that is with extended support and not mainstream support.

mk. thats fine.

Your computer is considered mainstream, unless a corporation purchased extended support.

The Fixed Lifecycle Policy applies to many commercial and some consumer products currently available through retail purchase or volume licensing and offers a minimum of:

  • 10 years of support (a minimum of five years Mainstream Support followed by five years Extended Support) at the supported service pack level for business, developer, and desktop operating system products. To be eligible for support, customers may be required to deploy the latest update. See the Lifecycle product search for specific details. Some products may offer less than 10 years of support.
  • Five years of Mainstream Support at the supported service pack level for consumer and multimedia products.

This could easily just be your laptop's performance degrading after years of use. The most obvious culprit would be your storage drive if it's a hard disk, which I would assume it is if you have an athlon based (and therefore fairly low end to begin with) machine. You can see this for yourself - download crystaldiskinfo and check your drive's health status.

There's absolutely no reason to go for anything other than 10 on a new desktop computer (unless you want to get rid of Windows altogether).

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨
