This remix is a little difficult to find. Yes, there's the version that appears on a compilation album for the UPN series Soul Food. That's easy enough to find; as a matter of fact, you can actually stream it online. And, matter of fact-ly, I own said album. But the full version of that remix is a little tough only because it was released as a promotional item for radio stations and shit. This is that specific version.

The "I'm doing this for my family" trope is kinda overdone, tho. I mean, IMO.

I also have a personal bias against characters that use "family" as motivational reasons, because I simply can't relate. But, eh, that's neither here nor there.

Oh boy, this song.

I cried the first time I watched Episode 6.

Now, after I've seen something once, I usually become desensitized to it if I revisit it. I know what's happening and what's coming up, after all.

But I rewatched Akuma no Riddle Episode 6 recently (after... hm... wait, has it been six years?!), and it -- hoooly moooly -- it made me shed those sad, sad tears again.

 

My heart.

My favorite Akuma no Riddle song, featuring my favorite pairing and favorite characters from the anime/manga.

 

More thoughts about Kirigaya and Chitaru, spoiler'd to avoid spoiling the anime for others:

(Probably won't make much sense unless you've watched Episode 6, though. )

Chitaru is best girl.

There, I said it. DON'T AT ME.

Yes, the "chivalrous knight" persona is a trope. DON'T CARE. Namatame is role-model material, for me.

 

And Kirigaya? Hm. Actually, on my first pass watching the anime and indulging in the manga, Kirigaya didn't stand out to me much. "Oh, another loli-type character," I thought, "Lolis are kinda 'meh' to me." She only blipped on my radar because Akuma no Riddle was very clearly pushing the Chitaru × Hitsugi pairing.

 

Coming back to the story many years later, however, I found my previous 'meh' feeling about Kirigaya changed. Deviating from super-hyper loli tropes, her character is quite quiet, sensible, and calculated. Silent, unassuming, and deadly -- as she should be, for an assassin specializing in poison. Absolutely nothing seems off about her, until the very last minute.

 

The capable ones don't flaunt their abilities. Both Namatame and Kirigaya follow the "actions speak louder than words" mantra, and I can absolutely respect that.

 

And their ending in Episode 6 is just heartbreaking.

I fully understand the reason they both did what they did. Kudos to Hitsugi for being completely honest to Chitaru in the end, and very many kudos to Chitaru for fulfilling her personal mission instead of being swayed by bonds of friendship ([cough] "friend-ship" [cough]).

 

The crushing part -- when Nio reveals that Kirigaya's wish was for Chitaru and her to leave the messy business behind, together --

THEN CHITARU TAKES THE POISON?!

 

 

There's any number of reasons Chitaru chose death instead of living with her mission completed (and one friend lesser). I'm interpreting it as loyalty and devotion, with a bit of guilt mixed in.

 

Ghhhhhhhhh, I love both of their characters. Easily my favorites out of the entire Akuma no Riddle cast.
