Likely the controller is the same chip running different firmware.

SAS and SATA are not the same, which is why they are seperated on that page.

This video should explain the difference between SAS and SATA:

TL;DW: if you don't know you need SAS, you don't need SAS. SATA is the standard for consumer desktop/NAS devices and SAS is a similar, but still different standard.

SAS controllers can read SATA drives, but not vice versa.

If SAS exists, and it supports SATA drives, then why the hell was SATA Express a thing?

yes that's why the question came to my mind in the first place and i guess it's bcuz
1) sas is only effective when multiple people are using/accessing the same hdds/storage at once! and sas is able to do it on one controller making it more targeted towards servers.
2) and sata express is effective even if a single user is accessing that storage. sata express i guess was more of "boosting" thing which had become a need bcuz tech wasn't as speedy as today is,bound by time, no wonder it's not available in most of modern motherboards.
